Question about Western Digital 320GB MyBook External USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

WD MyBook green light is flashing. The computer doesn't see the drive. I switched out the USB cable, and tried two different computers. No luck.

Basically what you have done is what I would suggest to try to rule out any outside problems. The problem is the drive unit itself.

Unfortunetly there are only a few things you can do at this point. When these units fail (all brands) the failed part is the usb interface. The hard drive inside the case is actually fine (the vast majority of times anyway).
If this were under warrenty you could send it in but you would be almost certain to loose everything on the drive. Most of the time they will try or say they will try to save your data but during the repair process it is lost. So if you have warrenty and don;t care if you lose what is on there then you can send it in and tell/ask them to save the data.

Your other option is to purchase a external usb drive enclosure ($15 up) Take the hard drive out of the WD case and put it into the new enclosure. That gives you acess to your data again. This isn't hard to do but if you are not comfortable doing this any tech can easily do it. It should take 20-30 minutes at most.

All external usb drive units work the same way and are built about the same. The data is stored on a ordinary hard drive that you would find in side your desktop or laptop. The inly oeal differences are the sizes physical as well as capacity and if the unit takes power from the usb port (only the smaller portable ones) or they use a plug in power supply. Regardless of the type brand or style putting the drive in a new enclosure usually fixes everything. The only time it doesn't is the rare time the drive inside has failed (heard about it, never seen one)

I'm not too tech savvy. Where would I fin a USB drive enclosure? Or, where would I find a tech to do it for me/?

Basically you can call any computer shop or chain store that sells computers. So if you have a Walmart, BestBuy Fry's etc (north american chains) they will either have a tech on staff or will be able to tell you who to call.

When you talk to them you need to tell them you need to transfer a hard drive from a usb enclosure that has a bad usb board to a new usb enclosure so you cn get acess to your data again. Make sure they know the data is what you need to keep. This is a simple job and really should be cheap. They may want you to buy an enclosure from them which mich cost a bit more say $35 but then you are delaing with a local person which is good.

I don;t know your location so I can't get any more specific than that. If you would like I can find you a video on how they do this and you might find that it isn;t that hard to do. If you have a 12 year old handy they can fix it ;-]

Well, I do have an 11 year old handy, but maybe I could do it.....I'll search for links, too, but if you have one handy, I'd appreciate it.

If you search for USB ENCLOSURE on google or bing or what ever search engine you will get lots of link to sales and such. If you do the same search but tell it to look for video's then you get the instruction info well more of them anyway.

Taking the old drive out will be the opostie of the assembly video. And depending on the usb enclosure you may need an additional part which is a drive adapter. That adapts the connector size when they use the really small laptop size drives in the enclosures.

Here is a video to start you off.

Mybook WD25001032-001 keeps on flashing and won't work...what is wrong with it. I need help. Thanks

Hello,

Try plugging the usb cable on a different port on the computer. If the light flashing is red, then there is a hardware problem on your WD. If this is still under warranty, then its best to have it checked from where you bought it or to any authorized WD service center. If its no longer under warranty, then you can open the WD and check for any disconnection. The inside contains a harddisk; you may want to disconnect the two connectors from the harddisk and reconnect them again.

I dont know if it's my computer or the mybook, but when i plug it into the computer its not popping up...but the blue light is on, and it make sound effect that i put somthing into the computer

An external storage-device has four major components:

* the USB cable

* the power-adapter

* the disk-drive inside the enclosure

* the USB-to-disk-drive adapter inside the enclosure.

One of these components has failed.

Try a different USB cable.

Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer.

Try connecting to a USB port on a different computer.

Take a "multi-meter" and measure both the voltage and amperage output from the AC adapter, and compare with the specifications on the label on the adapter.

Open the enclosure, and remove the disk-drive, and then connect it as a "slave" disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if it works at all.

Purchase a new, compatible, disk-drive, and install it in the enclosure, to "revive" your external storage device.

Get the part-number and serial-number from the label on your disk-drive, and access the manufacturer's web-site, and use "check warranty status", to see if they will replace the device, at minimal cost to you.

Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program -- you can buy a new W.D. device, through the W.D. web-site, at a significant discount.

There exist commercial "data recovery" services that can try to repair your device, just long-enough to rescue and copy your files. For example, see: https://services.seagate.com/index.aspx?lng=en-US for a "no data - no charge" guarantee.

My wd 1tb mybook no longer powers up-I have archived versions of these files but i would prefer to get the data off this drive

Is it still under warranty?

Possibilities:
* try connecting to a different USB port on your computer
* try connecting to a USB port on a different computer
* try a different USB cable between the computer and the MyBook
* disassemble the casing, and remove the disk-drive, and connect it as a "slave" drive in some desktop computer, to see if the files on the disk-drive are intact

If all else fails, search online for "professional data recovery service" -- a company that will repair the MyBook just long enough to copy all your files onto a new disk-drive. Of course, this is _expensive_.

Note that Western Digital has a Customer Loyalty Program -- knowing the serial-number on your disk-drive, you can buy a new MyBook from their web-site, at a good discount.

The drive letter for my external USB hard drive (MyBook) has disappeared from Windows Explorer. I tried My Computer/Manage/Disk Management and it is not listed there, either. I also tried powering down...

If it's not visible under Disk Management, then it means that your drive or cable is faulty. If the drive powers up when you connect the power adaptor, the cheapest thing to try is another USB cable. WD uses a standard A->miniB USB cable which you should be able to purchase easily - just take the original cable with you for reference of the mini plug, as there are a few different ones on the market. Or you can borrow such cable from a friend that has an MP3 player, an USB hub or similar device with same type of socket.
If this fails, I'm afraid it's the MyBook that's broken.

My Western digital 1tb wont work inspite of drivers being instal

Mybook does not require any additional driver to work on systems from Win XP onward, same for recents Linux and MAC OS.
If the drive is not detected on more of one computer, then it is usually because of a fault.
Try a replacement cable (mybook uses Mini USB to USB, available at computer and at camera shops). If still no luck contact WD, mybooks have one year warranty. If you want to recover data, the disk must be mounted on a different enclosure, that service can be asked when discussing repair.

My computer recognizes the WD but i cant view my files

Sounds like to me you already did the troubleshooting. If you cannot get the drive to function properly on another computer and it has the same symptoms, then logic would say that it is your drive. Note to also use a different cable to make sure it isn't the cable. I would try it on at least two more computers to make sure, hopefully with at least XP and Vista.

Connecting my external 320 to my laptop but its just flashes

Try a replacement USB cable first, and test the MyBook on a different computer, to ensure the fault is on the external storage unit.

There are two possibilities:

The Mybook USB/ATA controller board is faulty.
In this case you can simply take apart the enclosure and mount the disk into a new enclosure. WD Mybooks are SATA, but double check the hard disk connector to ensure.

The hard disk inside is faulty.
In this case repair may be expensive. You need to locate a data recovery facility with a 'clean room' , the cost is usually more than $800.

If this happened after a power surge, then the problem is most likely a faulty controller board.

If instead you have dropped the hard disk it is possible an hard drive failure, in that case repair will be expensive.

A replacement enclosure will stfrom art about $20 on Ebay or Amazon, and must not necessarily be WD .
Check if your disk is Sata or PATA (IDE) before buying the enclosure.

Wd mybook lights flash and cannot acess drive

Allright!!
I dont know if this will work for everyone.
Regarding my previous post i had taken the hard disk out of the enclosure and plugged it directly into the motherboard via sata to no avail.
I then decided to put it back in for enclosure and thought i will try it again.
In device manager i realised the hard disk kept trying to refresh inself and would cut off before it got recognised....playing with the enable/disable option i managed to (somehow) get the drive working(cant explain how yet)
But it worked long enough for me to make my backups.
So i would recomment trying to play around with device manager....might get it to work.
Also its intresting to know that if you try to claim on the warrenty using the serial number on the enclousure you get only one year warrenty but if you open it and enter the serial number printed on the hard disk itself you get a longer warrenty.....
Hope this helps
Good Luck
