Question about Acer Aspire G600p PC Desktop

1 Answer

My Aspire G600P desktop has a Fat 32 file on the C drive. I have bought a Verbatim External hard drive which has Nero Back it up which has an autoback up which formats the internal hard drive with NTFS. The Nero manual suggests I will loose all the data. Can I avoid this loss? Is there a better back up software (eg Iomega) which will save all my data but still allow me to create data and C drive back up? Alternatively can I safely change the FAT to NTFS and still keep my data. Thank you - any help much appreciated David 13/05/10

You cannot switch file systems and keep the data, you can however backup your data and reformat your hd, then proceed to copy from the backup media to the reinstalled OS. there are many tools to do both task, I would recommend download a linux live cd and backup to your external drive from there, then just reinstall windows and format your drive with an NTFS partition. I hope this helps.

It depends on which format the drive is using. If it's FAT-32 you can immediately read and write from it with your Mac. However, if the drive is formatted as NTFS you'll need a third party driver or software in order to write to the drive. Your Mac can read from but not write to NTFS.

Your should be able to read the drive.

How do I copy my complete music files from my computer windows 7 to Verbatim external hard drive with Nero software?

Hi!

Unless I'm misunderstanding, you shouldn't need to use Nero at all to copy your files.
If you use Windows Explorer and locate the directory with your music files, you should be able to just do a copy and paste to a directory on your external harddrive.

The NERO software is most-commonly used to write to CD/DVD/BluRay recordable media.

With Mac OS, just "drag-and-drop" your files and folders onto the icon for the drive, to "copy" the files.

Connect the external drive.
Open 'My Computer'.
One of the icons should be associated with the external drive.
Double-click the icon to "open" the external drive, to show the files/folders on the drive.

The usual limit is exactly 2GB, not 1GB.
It's a limitation of the file-system used for the directory of the disk-drive, when formatted according to the 'FAT32' specifications.

So, copy all the files currently on the Verbatim to your disk-drive.
Then, "reformat" the external (not the "internal") disk-drive, using the 'NTFS' file-system. This file-system has a maximum-file-size limitation for one file that is _much_ larger than the capacity of your Verbatim.

Then, copy all the "saved" files back onto the Verbatim.

Finally, copy your "large" files onto the Verbatim.

Can not copy large dual layer data file written with NERO 6

According to other sources (in Afterdawn) the problem lies with the media. Memorex
(Ritek) have apparently dumped a lot of cheap quality media into the market which
do not have a smooth layer transfer. Apart from that, I also noticed several badly
recorded discs (compared to some Mitsubishi discs I had earlier). Apparently these
are meant for the cheap Asian copy market (Ritek statement - search Internet
reviews). I now have to save up enough in order to buy those expensive Verbatim
discs (or use DVDShrink).

Personally, I feel that the disc manufacturers should get together with companies
like Nero and manufacturers of burners to solve such problems before dumping it onto
the consumers. This is irresponsible marketing (very common today).
