Question about Sony KP-53XBR45 53" Rear Projection Television

Sony 1997 KP-53XBR45

Great Sony projection TV that have owned since new. No problem till about 1 month ago the remote no longer operated the TV. I have another Sony unit and this same remote does work on that unit. Believe the problem must be in the front senor (or further down the chain). What should be my process from this point on to find the problem and fix?

First open up the front panel after disconnecting the power, be careful since you can receive an electrical shock that is very dangerous, if you don't know what you are doing, then get a technician to work on it but basically you can replace the sensor and see if that fixes your problem, before replacing it, back track it and see if anything looks bad. If you need a service manual, I can point you to a site where it won't be free but can give you one. This service I don't think is online anywhere. Thank you and good luck and don't hesitate to ask for further help

Well...the sensor is in side on a board that interfaces with the control board..are you technically adroit enough to open this up, without frying your self? Need to ask to ensure your personal safety

You purchased this in 1997? Warranty on that model is only for 1 year, so you're going to have to pay for the repair...

and it looks like sony does not guarantee that they will sell you replacement parts or service for any longer that 2 years after purchase.

at this point, I'd say you'd have to look in the yellow pages for a television repair shop.

My kds-r60xbr1 sony wega projection tv is blinking green then red and wont go on how do i fix this problem .i also just replaced the bulb about 3 months ago.

Try connecting the TV directly to a different wall outlet and check. If the issue persists, try power resetting the TV. Turn Off the TV and remove the power plug from the wall outlet for 1 minute and reconnect it and check the operation. If the issue persists, then the TV requires service.

Still getting "Projection lamp is nearing end of life"

KDF46E2000 - Change Lamp Warning - Reset

Bulb is most likely OK. Original bulb in Sony TV is Philips, label on bulb usually says Philips. Sony don't make bulbs. Sony Cost is usually 1.5 times other sources. Many shopping cart operations sell condemned, reject or poor quality electronic service items because cost of return and fooling with them is excessive. This is obvious and widespread with convergence ICs and other parts.

Lamp timer needs reset. This is usually an automatic function. TV detects Increased lamp current from previous failed bulb or weak bulb condition and resets automatically. TV must be unplugged for lamp replacement for this to work. Occasionally it must be reset manually, as below:

1. TV must be in standby mode. (Power off).
2. Press the following buttons on the Remote Commander within a
second of each other:
DISPLAY Channel 5 Volume + POWER .1. Access Service Adjustment Mode and select the Service Menu that
contains the Category with the Adjustment Item you want to change.
2. To change the Category, press 2 or 5 on the Remote Commander.
Note: Pressing 2 or 5 only changes the categories within the
Service Menu displayed. To change a Category on one of the other
Service Menus, press the JUMP button until the correct Service
Menu is displayed.
3. To change the Adjustment Item, press 1 or 4 on the Remote
Commander.
4. To change the Data Value, press 3 or 6 on the Remote
Commander.
Note: To go back to the last saved Data Value, press 0 then ENT
on the Remote Commander to read the memory.
5. To save the changes, press MUTING then ENT to write into
memory.
6. To exit service mode, turn the power off by pressing POWER .
Wait 2 minutes before restarting the set to allow the fans to
completely shut down or the Service Menu will appear on the screen.

The lamp may be starting to go, the symptoms you describe are classic warning signs. You could unplug tv let it cool down and check lamp most likely the glass will not look clear maybe a little milky or smoky in areas..dead give away.

Remote no longer works after opening rear of TV

I think blowing air cleaned the TV but Remote Sensor at front of TV got more dusty and now unable to receive Infrared signal of remote. That's my theory and can be confirmed by cleaning of Remote Sensor in TV.

My unit is 9 years old, almost 10 (in 2 months) and started the same a couple of months ago. The only way to fix it is to have them serviced by a tech and replace the projectors. Its just the age/use of the unit catching up with it.

Many resellers sold them with an offer to sell you an optional maintence service where they would fix/clean/replace the projectors for upto 5 years after purchase. I'm not sure if they even have the parts anymore since these tv's are no longer produced. After market repairs are likely to cost as much as or nearly as much as buying a new flat screen tv.
