I've basically now got everything reassembled, but am left with no idea where to put the P2, P4, P7, and P8 power cords. I only have one more component left to install (the PCI card for connecting by CAT5 to the router/modem). Essentially, I just opened up another old, unusable desktop I have to better understand the basic set-up.

As for the type and maker of the motherboard, I have searched for hours all over it to locate it and cannot. I called HP (Compaq) to ask them for technical support and they tell me that my daughter's PC's serial number is invalid. (I bought the PC for $50 from a tech guy and am wondering if that wasn't the best move). HP was not able to offer me any more suggestions.

She just wants her PC back (she's 15). It's my own fault that, when I saw how clogged it was with dust (about 8 hamsters worth, if we had hamsters), I thought it would be wise to get it cleaned out before it started causing bigger problems with the PC. As you can imagine, I'm feeling less than brilliant right now and am quite tired with staying up until 4am trying to get it resorted.

We won't EVEN begin to go into my exhaustive efforts to try to repair her Aspire One AOA150. She had cracked the LED screen, which was easy enough to replace, but even after following all the recovery instructions from the website I purchased it at, it remains a black screened "project".

Needless to say, between working on all these PC's, repairing my own car (successfully, mind you), my hands are looking like I do barbed-wire sculpture for fun in the off-hours.

Be calm. All internal components fit only where they belong, if you read the name and number of *********** board you could google for the specific manual.

Basically you need to plug hard an optical drives, they need to be conected to the motherboard and also to the power source, most modern desktop computers have sound and video cards in the motherboard, if this is not the case plug them also. If you also removed RAM and processor be careful when reseating them, make sure they are firmly connected before turn on the computer. I hope this may help you.

First I'm sorry that the first word in the compound "motherboard" got starred out, I looks like I'm cursing but this is not the case.

All those connectors go to the motherboard, if it is already connected your computer might not need them, Have you tried to turn it on? I'm sorry to tell you that the computer you bought is a bit old, if everything is connected and still doesn't turn on it might be a problem with the power supply the board or some internal component, I'm sorry i can't be of more help.

How or what do i need to connect internet i have router (2wire) from AT&T for wireless laptop but now i bought a desktop an compaq presario 5000 with windows 98

You need a Wireless adapter for the Compaq desktop. But with Win98, it will be almost impossible to find one that will work in your Compaq. Everything out there requires at least WIN XP.

Best thing to do is to use an Cat5 Ethernet cable and connect the Desktop to the 2Wire.

If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response
Thanks, Joe

I hve a compaq presario 5000 desktop. It will

if you can view your desktop and use the menus, go to start/all programs/accessories/system tools/system restore, if you had enabled this option earlier then you can restore the system to an earlier known date when you system worked.
else you can try installing winXP again, try the option to "Update" when the install option comes on.
else start PC, before the WinXp screen comes on press F8 key, use the Safe Mode to start PC, if you can see everything then shut down and restart in normal mode.

I did think Windows Xp even run on a 64K memory!!
the reason you are getting the error, because the size of meomries.
Here is the thing, lets say you get a working copy of the Windows Xp, and installed it. your machine is going to about half hours to come up, it is going to take longer if you go on the Internet. (5minutes per page).
by the way presario 5000 dated back to Win95. maximum memory is 512MB. which is minimum requirement for WIndows XP.
The cost for upgrade your machine to minimum specification is not really worth. you are going to have to get a new one soon.
the reason for this, is all of the software and Internet web applications are running at a 2007-2008 software, the machine you are using will never be able catch up to it. (todays standard).
My suggestion: if you can affort it, get a new or refurbished one with minimum specification (e-mail me at, if you want the specs.) you will be much happier.
