Gas somehow is getting into oil reservoir. Twice now. Initially thought it was operator error. After second time, know it is the mower. Craftsman 17 hp 24 inch riding.

I would check the carburetor float to ensure that it stops gas flow once it is full. It is possible that the float is stuck and gas is getting to the top of the engine and getting past the rings.

Where is the oil filter on a 17 HP Craftsman briggs & Straten engine and what grade of oil do I need

It may not have a filter, but if it does it would be a small spin on type on the left side of the engine about 4 inches in diameter. Use SAE 30 in that engine. It takes about 48 ounces of oil. Sears sells 48 oz bottles or you can use oil from your favorite auto parts store. Just don't over fill or it will smoke. Verify level with dip stick screwed in.

I have a 1987 craftsman riding 17 horse mower. I

Sounds like the rings are worn and letting oil escape past them into the cylinder head. After all, it's been in service a long time. There are several options, including a rebuild with boring out the cylinder and put oversize rings in, buying a new engine and replacing the old one, or just buying a new mower.
