I have a Toshiba Satelite 1805-s253. When I turn it on, it attempts to start but then will immediately shut down with the power indicator flashing orange. I check the power supply and that is working ok.

power supply must b okay but the lead connecting laptop may have gone faulty, try changing it, if this is not the reason then some internal hardware problem

White Screen - Unable to See Desktop GUI.

Two separate problems, sounded like..

White screen? If external video is okay then it's likely (1) a bad screen, or (2) a disconnected video cable.

If the system shuts down, I'd check the fan - if the fan is reasonably clean and running, then it's probably a bad motherboard.

Toshiba Satellite 1805-s253 memory upgrade

Usually this means it supports 512 mb of "Single sided" ram, which is rarer and more expensive... the usual ram you buy now is double-sided.. which will often only see one of the sides in older machines.

Shutting off

First off im affraid you cannot totally rely on ANY software with regards to Thermo sensing
they are only an indication and can be anywhere from 5 to 25 degreeC out, dont get me wrong
generally you can get a good indication but thats the best they can be. Listen for fans kicking in then staying on, keyboard getting warm to hot.
If the machine is just cutting out that would suggest power supply either charger fault etc (is the battery fully charged when it happens) or overheating, if its shutting down the first thing i would try is running in safe mode see how it performs, check for any spyware/virus, run
Hope helps for now let me know
