Question about Breadman TR444 Bread Maker

Open Question

The spacer ring under the paddle got brittle and fell apart.

This caused the dough to ooze through and seize up the rotor. Am I
making sense? Can it be replaced or is the machine done in.
Model number TR444 It's an old model - given to me recently - just
started using it after many years of disuse.

SOURCE: Excessive wear between paddle and panshaft?

You can drill and tap the paddle, where it faces the flat on the shaft, and install a small setscrew. Something like a 10-32. Make sure you use a nylok screw or use a thread locking compound (available @ auto parts stores) to prevent the screw from working loose and getting into your bread! Just tighten the screw enough for a snug fit so that it can be removed for cleaning.

Your machine has a lubricating grease that is under the small gasket or washer at the bottom of the pan under each paddle. After a lot of use the little gasket can fail and the grease can get get past the gasket and into your bread. The best thing to do is either replace your pan with what is called a "pan assembly which will include everything but the paddles. If you decide to do that be sure to keep your paddles. The other choice of course is to replace your machine which might not be a bad idea if your machine has been used a lot because you would have a new pan assembly but older parts may begin to fail such as the drive belt. Bread machines aren't all that expensive anymore so you may want to go ahead and replace especially since you just use your machine for making dough.

I expect the teeth are stripped on the plastic drive shaft or the motor has seized.
Time for a new one I guess.

Pull the pan out and turn the little paddle with your finger. Is the paddle slipping on the spindle? If yes, then your paddle is worn out. If you move the paddle around and it doesn't slip on the spindle then look to see if the ears on the bottom of the pan are turning too when you move the paddle. If yes, then your problem is further down in the machine. You may have a slipping belt. Those are some of the things you can check.

On dough mode, machine won't knead

paddles could be slipping. that was my issue. Here's the solution if so.

What happened in my case is that the nut holding the rotor that drives the left paddle was loose, allowing the paddle to slip. Only one paddle would knead and mix. The belts in my machine are fine, in fact so massive I can't imagine them breaking. But access? Yikes.

So, forget the screws on the bottom. They just hold on the feet. Remove all the screws around the top of the baking chamber, the two that hold the control panel on, and the remaining screws under it. There are about 12 screws. Remove the 6 at the bottom of the baking chamber, but not the 2 that hold down the element. Remove the metal sides of the baking chamber (it's one piece). All this is to get access to the screws that really hold the works to the base. They're around the perimeter of the metal chassis on which the motor and element are mounted. Remove them (get help or arrange something to keep the control panel from exerting too much pull on the wires to the element. You could unplug the control unit but I didn't need to.)

Once you lift the motor assembly exposing the belts underneath, you'll see what's loose. Each nut holds down a metal plate beneath the rotor. If it gets loose, the rotor can move more or less freely and won't turn. It looks like they applied an inadequate dab of glue to hold those in place. I should have put in a star washer to keep the nut from loosening again. Next time.

Good luck getting all the screws back in the right places ;-) Machine works fine now.

First time use. set machine to dough and pressed

Hi, Keep the bread pan out of the machine and start a kneading cycle. Look through the lid window and see if the motor shaft is turning. If no...then the belt fell off. If the motor spins, check to make sure the paddle spins freely. Keep pan out and turn paddle by hand. If no then the bearing is frozen. If that's ok..make sure you inserted the pan correctly into machine. If everything checks out then it's a faulty machine. Before you do anything send it out for warranty service. Usually it's warranted for a year. Hank

I have a Breadman Model: TR845. It seems that the gear in the actual machine that turns the knead paddle is striped. It turns when the pan is empty ... so I know it is working, however with dough inside or...

I had the same problem with my Breadman TR845 that I bought used at Goodwill. I made my first loaf O.K. then could not get the knead paddle to turn except when the pan was empty. I took it apart and discovered that the timing belt (flat belt with integral teeth) had slipped off the black plastic gear attached to the shaft of the motor. The belt was still around the shaft of the motor which allowed it to move the paddle only when empty. I needed a small spacer washer that would keep the black plastic gear from sliding on the shaft and allowing the belt to slip off. There is a lip only on one side of the plastic gear so it if moves the belt can slip off. I created a spacing washer from the cap on a tube of toothpaste. I cut the cap in half and had to use a metal file to get it the right size. I needed to be 1/4 inch tall and 3/4 inch in diameter. I cut the spacer so that I could slip it over the shaft. After putting it all back together everything works fine. And the toothpaste tube was almost empty anyway.

P.S. There are lots of screws that hold it together and the belt and gears are at the bottom of the Breadman and you have to take the whole thing apart to get to the bottom. I was able to leave all the wires attached so that putting it back together went quickly compared to the work of taking it apart.

The paddle will not stay on the shaft while mixing dough.

Probably the paddle and shaft are worn. Both are replaceable. Buy a new Paddle and a Kneader mounting shaft unit (Part No. ADA 29A115)

Makes a bad loose sound when mixing dough

My Breadmakers Hearth was making the same sound, so after taking it apart I found that it was only the Bread Pans "under paddle" that the machine reaches up and connects to to drive the Paddle. I wears loose and wobbles and starts to slip making that banging sound. You can either replace the Bread Pan or like I did INVERT the under paddle (requires removing the C-clamp washer) to extend the life of the Pan and use of the Hearth. Hope this helps you.
