Check for objects and debris under or around the carrier, with it off see if you can move the carrier back and forth, check the battery pack to be sure it hasent be come disloged. If you can move the carrier put some WD40 on the silver shaft it slides on.

Wheelwriter platen latch removal

Very vague question. the left side you have to drive the pin out.
right side just a clip.

If the platen wont stay down you can carefully wire it down so it doesnt interfere with the carrier is moved to the left.

Or buy a used platen.

The humming might be an wheel miss-alignment. and/or
Grinding maybe the steering box (rack and pinion)?

Carriage return stuck on left side when powering on

The first thing to try is to lubricate the silver rail that the carriage rides on. A few drops of a light oil ( sewing machine oil ) may take care of the problem. Turn machine off, apply oil and move carriage by hand back and forth. Turn back on and see if this took care of it.

This is regarding a ibm wheelwriter 10 series ii it is "stuck" on the left side & will not go to the right at all. Margin release will not help, tried turning off & on, tried unpluging. HELP...

Can you move the carriage asm with your hand with the power off? Move it all the way to the right. Turn it on and see if it now will move to the left. If it makes a grunting or shrieking noise. Lubricate the main silver colored shaft.

Print head moves left and stays horrible noise

The problem is either something is interfering with the carrier movement OR the carrier homing sensor is broken/defective. First, turn off the power and manually move the carrier to the right side frame, check for foreign objects in the machine (pens, pushpins, paper clips etc.). Put some oil (10 weight) on a cloth and clean the chrome shaft that the carrier travels on.(by the rubber cogged belt). This is a common problem. If the sensor itself is the problem, take to a repair shop.(not common)

Try puting some light oil (WD40 works well) on the silver shaft that the carrier slides on, also check for debris it that area.

Stove cutoff after loud popping sound

The element burnt in to and arced which is the loud noice you heard red flash of light. It probably tripped the breaker at the electrical panel. Don't turn it back on until someone checks the element and replaces it.

IBM Wheelwriter 6 Problem

The lights blinking indicates an error code, that mean a keyboard error or posibly a problem in the start up procedure. This is a problem that would have to be solved in a repair shop.

Wheelwriter 6

You may need a ribbon motor or motor board, however on the older wheelwriters sometimes the gear mesh gets sloppy and gears jam tooth for tooth. Try moving the ribbon lift gear/cam on rt. side of the carrier by hand with the machine off if it won't move that's the trouble. Wiggle it back and forth and it may free up.
