Engine hard to start, then runs ok, but loses power and dies after a few minutes, with smoke, then oil, blowing badly into air cleaner.

That is definitely a sign of bad rings. Sometimes people turn the mower on its side, the wrong side and then oil slips past into the cyclinder . Spray some carburetor cleaner into the plug hole then reinstall the plug. Start the unit up and see if it burns the oil from the cyclinder, give it a few minutes. If the problem goes longer than a few minutes then yes, bad rings.

Hi , couple of questions,
1. is it using engine oil?
2. What type of diesel fuel do you burn ?(cheap/premium)
3. Have you ever used fuel additives ?
4. Does the smoke go away after warm up or still there when you put car under load / accelerate hard?

Simple thing first with the engine ticking over lift bonnet/hood and remove the dipstick, have someone lightly rev the engine LIGHTY if you see oil traveling up the dipstick spout , this is a sign of the crankcase pressurising , their is a crankcase breather filter which are obtain overlooked during servicing which can cause e
If you are not burning oil , look for the egr valve it will be coming off the air intake and insure it is clean and operational( this is an emission saving device fitted to diesels which lets the engine re -burn it exhaust gases) it can get clogged with oily residue from the diesel fuel and in fact can be like a tar consistency this clogs/ not functioning correctly can cause power loss and oil deposits making their way into the exhaust system and stops valves seating correctly . On positive it is easy to work at and clean with brake cleaner, then dry and lightly oil to free up then wipe clean.

also worth while and to ensure work on egr was worth while and lasts remove the air intake ducts as these too will be clogged it builds up over time and can reduce the air duct flow by50% this is not cleaned during ordinary servicing! clean with boiling water and washing up liquid sounds strange but worked best for me! Let sit to work using baby bottle /pipe cleaners when clean ensure it is dry completely before refitting I found blowing out with compressor was worth while as you do not want and loose dirt inside as I will make its way through.

final thought which has been very beneficial for me, when carried out the above use only premium fuel( cheaper fuel now is mixed with bio diesel and leaves bad engine deposits ) use diesel fuel additive I have found millers Eco max 4 excellent, double dose first time drive hard in 3rd for a few miles to work its way though you will notice smoke for the first couple of used this is contamination working through system. Replaced fuel pump in 1995 geo prizm, now it is flooding.


this is actually a toytal engine, but they had 2 , 1.6L and 1.8L>
which is yours. but I answer in generic form, EFI.
ever do a full 60k mile service on that engine.?
that white smoke is a bad sign.

95 Courier with Mazda diesel is hard to start, runs rough, blows lots of blue smoke and won't go over 60kph in top gear


I'd get your injectors rebuilt, and tune up your injector pump. Run a little seafoam in the diesel tank, and in the oil. Should make it clear right up.

Hard to start and oil soaked air filter, smokes and loses power


It sounds like it got tilted on its side. The air filter needs to be cleaned or replaced and the carburetor needs to be removed and cleaned.

When the tiller gets tipped over toward the air filter, oil will run out into the filter and the carburetor.

If the filter is foam you can clean it with gasoline, if its paper just buy a new one.

The carburetor is between the air filter box and the engine, it should come off with a few bolts, just remember where the springs hook up.

Open it up, take it apart and spray everything with carburetor cleaner from your local auto parts store. When you put it all together it will run like new!

I have a Simplicity model 1692762 with a 16hp Briggs and Stratton. The mower blew large plume of white smoke three times while cutting grass over a period of 10 minutes. Engine seemed to lose some power...


I suspect an internal engine issue such as a valve, the white smoke was oil and it could mean a bent, burned valve or damaged valve seat causing the valve stem seal to leak allowing the engine to **** some oil and burn it (the white smoke) and now you lack compression. It is less likely but possible the oil was overfilled and you "lipped" the piston which causes the compression to drop. check the compression, 100-120 is normal, less than that means bad internal parts.

It's the automatic choke!

The choke is "closed" or barely open... When cold, the engine needs a RICH mixture (more gasoline, less air). When the engine warms up, it requires a LEAN mixture (less gas, more air).

It is probably creating BLACK tailpipe smoke ... that means unburnt gasoline. (Blue smoke is OIL, white smoke is WATER).

Put the parking / emergency brake ON.
1. Remove air cleaner assembly from intake, use a carb cleaner spray or throttle body spray cleaner and spray just a little. (AutoZone $5)
2. Find the accelerator2.gif arm under the hood.
3. start car, rev the engine to make sure how to operate the accelerator from under the hood.
4. Carefully spray into carb / throttle body and work the accelerator ... don't let the engine die...
5. Watch out for "backfire"... it may create a small flame out of the carb. It will extinguish itself in one second.

6. You may need to do this two, three times.
7. Add a "complete fuel system2.gif cleaner" to your next tank of gas ($8).

That's it! ... pretty cheap, too.

13.5 OHV B&S won't stay running, blows gas out carb.


Check to see if the oil is over filled. check if the oil smells like gas, could be a gas leak into the crank case.
More than likely the head gasket is blown internally, causing excessive crank case pressure

Smoke problem

there are couple of smoke type.blue smoke is oil, black smoke is fuel, and white smoke is water, if it clears after starting and running a few minutes it's probably your valve guide seals leaking oil down on top of your pistons, causing it to smoke until burned off and foul your plugs.
