Air conditioner fried

My husband plugged our air conditioner in an outlet that was the wrong wattage and the unit fried. Now it won't work. Is it worth trying to get it repaired or will it be about the same price to just get a new one?

Hello
Wrong voltage? or amperage maybe.

Have you tried it in another outlet that will work? Usaully the circut breaker will blow before the a/c is destoyed.
There may also be a reset button on the cord of the a/c.

Depending on what fried on the unit you may want to consider a new one, usually the repair cost is almost as much as a new one.

It is hard to say how bad it is, if the compressor is gone, then for sure it would be cheaper to replace the whole unit, if it just fried a switch. I take it that he plugged it into the wrong voltage, if it tried to run for a little while, it will have more damage, than if it was a flash and a popping of the breaker.

What do i have to do to plug my 110 air conditioner into where my 220 window unit

You need a step down transformer, to convert 220V to 110V. You can't just plug the 110V A/C unit in directly unless it is clearly marked as being suitable for multi-voltage supply (110V - 220V input).

Such a transformer has to be of sufficient capacity to handle the current, or wattage, that will be required. The Frigidaire unit in your question is a 3.5 kW cooling capacity, so the transformer would need to be about the same, ie for a 10A supply at least. They are quite big boxes, about $120.

You would put this in the roof or in a cupboard.

Hello Pete T - From what you have described the air conditioner possibly have a defective power/control board or faulty plug. I would suggest contacting a professional to accurately diagnose and repair the unit.

Plug a light into the outlet used for the A/C, if the light does not come on when reset then the circuit breaker that provided the power to the outlet need to be reset or replaced.

Heat/AC unit in working order, plugged in 20Amp outlet.. no fan?

Hi1
Do you have at least 200 volts at your outlet? Check that first. You said you brought it home from work, so when you plugged it in at home did you plug it into a 120 volt recepticle?

LG M8003L Air Conditioner does not power on

i think there may be damage to a small electrical component in the circuit board which probably fried just before breaker popped open

Breaker switch tripped when ac compressor engaged

The power strip is rated too low for the wattage of the unit and that causes the breaker to trip. I would be better for the unit if it were plugged directly into a wall outlet, because there is less a chance of voltage drop which would burn out the unit. They will only tolerate 10% voltage drop before getting into trouble.

Hi Denise, you and your family are doing God's work and I applaude you for it. let me help.

Most small window air conditioners are 110 volt units which means that they plug in to a regular household outlet. If the nearest outlet is further away than the cord will reach you can use an APPLIANCE GRADE extension cord, if necessary.

The other issue is to secure the unit in the window. IF it is a double hung window you can probably open the window, put the air conditioner in place and secure it with a couple of angle brackets and 2" screws.

I would bring a hammer, screw drivers, putty knife, razor blade knife and pliers just in case the window is painted shut, or there is a storm window that has to be removed.

Get back with anyother questions you may have. I want to help.
