SOURCE: Downloading software (Twain??)
The download website for your scanner is here:
A TWAIN driver is simply a generic scanner software driver that your specific Canon software can hook into and use.
I recommend starting with this one and see if it installs the TWAIN driver you need:
"CanoScan Toolbox v2.2.3 for Windows 98/Me/2000/XP"

Try using the original USB cable that came with the scanner. I swear it worked for me, even though it doesn't make sense (although I suppose there is increased resistance, thus less power going to the scanner by using a longer and/or different USB cable than the one included). Give it a try.

SOURCE: Error message
Try going to CanoScan Toolbox > Settings and reset the 'defaults' button at bottom... this will restore factory settings and hopefully fix your problem... The other error message you can expect to get is "unable to scan - insufficent memory, check your **** space' (or something similar)... same fix works for both! ...Have had both messages on mine, sounds like a semi-regular conflict on some sort, but seems to be easily fixed. Good luck :-)

I had the same problem more than 1 year ago and then found the solution (at least in my case that is) somewhere on the internet. Since I have the same problem with a new computer I searched the internet once more, but did not find the solution. However, last time I was so clever to write down the solution on the disk of my old laptop. The laptop is gone, but not the disk, so I could access it by putting it in an USB enclosure and was able to find the solution once again. Here it is:
c:WINDOWS wain_32CNQLxx (xx is the number of your scanner) should be included in the PATH environmental variable.
Now I know where to look for I found the link where I found it first:
The entry was by pallosp.

Select your operating system and download the driver "TWAIN Driver - LiDE 20 Scanner Driver Ver. 126.96.36.199a_xp" and then download the software "Canoscan toolbox" ...here is the link:
