I have a 1989 chevy 1500 5.7 and i need to know where the fuel pump is located on the gas tank. also if i dont have a place to pump out the gas, is it easier to just cut a hole in the bed?
You "could" remove the bed, or just lift it high enough to work on the tank. There are 6 or 8 bolts depending if it is a short bed or long bed. But you should undo the 2 straps from underneath, the filler tube from the gas cap filler, and lower the tank with a jack. Another problem these trucks have is the wiring connection to the sending unit/fuel pump assembly. GM recommends to replace this harness end when you work on it. (about $12.00 for the harness connection). These sending units/pumps retail about $300-$400, but you can find them on line starting about $120.00.
Testimonial: " i cannot get the bolts off the frame in the rear, so i am going to take the front ones off and try to lift the bed so i can get at the tank. i dont know if this will work, but unless i can drain the gas out i have to try. thanks"
The fuel pump is located on top of the gas tank. I would not cut a hole in the bead of the truck, could cut harness or gas tank, it would be easyer to just remove the bed, four bolt's is all that hold's the bed and disconnect the wiring harness, good luck and I hope this was very helpful.
