I had been having this same issue on my Windows Vista Ultimate - 64-bit computer at home. The HP Update process would run and display about three or four failed installations. I ended up logging onto HP's website and searching for HP Update, and came across a version update - 4.0.12.

I downloaded the 4.0.12 version, installed it and re-ran the updates. Everything worked as planned.

While I didn't read anything specific on HP's site, I'm guessing the failed installs has something to do with the HP Update client itself, and version 4.0.12 fixes those problems.

You can get the 4.0.12 versions here:

If you don't trust the direct link, here's the support article from HP:

You need to run the HP update as an administrator. You can set the short cut to do this...

Start -> Programs -> HP -> HP Update -> right click -> properties -> compatibiltiy tab

Then the check box down near the bottom. I guess you can also do this for all users (press the "Show settings for all users")

Not tried it automatically yet, but if you run the short cut the updates install successfully. You may need to go find the actual executable and do the above for the automatic update to run in admin?

Windows is more up to date than th one tryng to download,I need to cancel this but do not know how to find it

. First of all click the Start button to view the Start Menu. Then choose the Control Panel option.
2. The Control Panel window opens up now.
Click the System and Security link from the Control Panel window.
Important updates provide significant benefits, such as improved security and reliability. Recommended updates can address non-critical problems and help enhance your computing experience. Optional updates are not downloaded or installed automatically.

6. Important Updates can be configured in four ways:

  • Install updates automatically (recommended)
  • Download updates but let me choose whether to install them
  • Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them
  • Never check for updates (not recommended)
If you choose Install updates automatically , there are additional options to schedule the update at a convenient time.

3. The System and Security section of Control Panel opens up. Here you can see the Windows Update link.
As you can see in the above screenshot there is direct links to the important Windows Update option here it self in slightly small fonts, such as Turn automatic updating on or off, Check for updates, View install updates . You may choose the required option directly from here. But we are going ahead to the dedicated Windows Updates section of the Windows 7 control panel by clicking the main Windows update link.

4. So now we are at the Windows Update section of our Window 7 Control panel. You can manually look up for any new updates by clicking the Check for updates button under the heading Check for updates for your computer fromthis window. In order to modify the Windows update option click theChange settings in the left pane.
5. Here you may change the way Windows 7 download and install updates. Configurable option include Important Updates , Recommended updates ,Who can install updates and Featured update notifications .
or if Never check for updates is selected:

Sounds like you've got a bad driver from Windows update which is not a first. Firstly turn off automatic windows updates so it doesnt auto-update again. Where you re-installed the drivers from in Device Manager choose uninstall and also there will be an option to delete the files associated with the driver, get rid of those. Heres a link straight to the HP website there is 3 drivers to choose from either look in device manager or it doesnt matter if you try the wrong 1 it just wont find the hardware. If this all works fine turn back on windows update but choose let me decide when to download and instal then uncheck the wireless update, this will hide it from all future updates. Please let me know how it all goes i still have a few more ideas if not. Cheers from Scott

I have a HP Pavilion Entertainment PC. It worked

It could be a problem with the update. You could have used system restore to go back to before you installed the update. Re-imaging probably cancelled that. I would check for virus' before going any further. Download a program called malwarebytes (free version), install-update and scan. If nothing comes up try the system restore or uninstall the service pack. You can always reinstall it again later.

When i want to update an update that needs to be updated

Do you know what the update is that fails? I guess the easiest way to see it is instead of using auto update, use Custom Update and see what needs to be installed.

I have also seen were some people have suggested this is caused by spy-ware on your system. Perhaps a in-depth scan would eliminate that possibility.
Personally I would not worry much about HP updates. The only time I would think of doing such updates is if I were having a problem with my system and an update directly addressed the issue. In fact I would go as far as to remove the HP updater.

Now Windows Updates are a different matter and should be done as they often cover security issues.

The HP Update program (bloatware, in my opinion) doesn't work with Vista very well, even though the system would have been bought with Vista pre-installed.Vista.

If you want to get rid of the HP Updates program, go to the Start menu and into the 'Control Panel'. Select "Programs & Features". The program is called 'HP Update'. You can Uninstall that program there if you like. You can manually check for updated hardware drivers by going to the HP site's Drivers and Downloads area, and entering your Desktop Model Number.

The HP Updates program also seems to have problems with various software/hardware firewalls, particularly when running Windows Vista, preventing it to search for and download optional driver updates for your HP computer.

HP says that hpsudelpacks.exe is a virus which affects mostly the automatic downloading of hp updates. go to their website and download the realtek audio driver manually to see if you can actually download updates to begin with. You should update any spyware or virus program if you have to and then shut down my computer and restart in safe mode. When in safe mode , run windows defender found here , then run avg virus program found here , then restart your computer, click on hp update in my start button area, and you should able to download another update.

No sound

Make sure to update XP or Vista, completly. Including all service packs. In many cases that may very well solve the issue. If not, try to install the recommended driver from HP after all the updates are performed. There is a free app called Driver Cleaner on and solves many driver issues.

You can choose the correct driver to clean within the driver cleaner app. Reboot after cleaning and then let windows detect the sound card/device. Windows may ask where a driver is located, choose cancel.
Run your install app for the driver that you got from HP. If this does not help, I will be glad to explain on how to manually install a device driver.
