Question about Air Conditioners

Goodman central unit not functioning

Had transformer break its mounting bracket. Replaced transformer. Worked great then mounting tabs broke again. Replaced transformer again. Now the LED on the controlboard does not light up but you can hear a buzzing noise from transformer. Could the capacitor cause this problem? The control board was replaced last year and all the rollout limit switches were replaced when first transformer replaced. My e-mail address is clk101@msn.com.

You may be putting the incorrect transformer in. Try to get a OEM from your local HVAC dealer. Which capacitor are you referring to?

Put meter probes at in put terminal of the element if you read 220volts that mean your relay is good. if you got it there use amp meter on one leg of that element. You should read some amp draw there but if there is no amp draw it mean the element broke.

Can a bad transformer send more than 24 volts to thrmostat

No. A transformer will only change the voltage upwards or downwards. If a transformer winding shorts out then the voltages would be lowered if unit even worked at all. Generally a shorted winding will cause the unit to overheat and just burn out completely; or the protective fuse will pop.

Defective electronics on power supply could account for incorrect voltage if the built in voltage regulators are not working properly.

Hello, you can Ohm the compressor windings with a multimeter. Just kill power the the unit, remove the wires from compressor and check each winding. You should have resistance, if not the windings are open and compressor must be replaced.

Have a goodman central air unit, non heat pump. keeps smoking transformers, on the inside unit, replaced fan capacitor and transformer as the old transformer was smoked as well. But to no avail the new...

There is a short in the control wiring that needs to be tracked down. Ohm the wiring to the low voltage controls, ie thermostat wiring and thermostat. Try disconnecting the thermostat wires to rule out the problem in the control wiring to the thermostat or thermostat itself, then install a new transformer without connecting the thermostat wiring, jump the red and green wire at the unit low voltage connections to test blower, and then add yellow for compressor, should be no more than 3 amps on control side wiring with A/C on.
If the problems still exists without the thermostat wiring connected then there is a problem in the wiring in the unit or control board itself.

Hi,
That is a high pressure safety switch....either the switch is bad or you are running extremely high pressure and need to unit serviced...you should hire a pro to find out the exact cause of your problem...gauges will need to be placed on the unit to determine that exact problem.

Goodman Furnace/AC unit not working 3a fuse blows even after replacement. once thermostat is turned on and clicks to start ac unit the fuse blows

3 amp is standard.the fuse is blowing to protect the transformer. It is telling you that there is a short in the low voltage wiring.Goodman also had an issue with the coil shorting on the contactor. To prevent damage.....i'd call a pro.It should be a fairly simple repair.
