FURNACE MAKES STRANGE INTERMITTENT CLICK SOUND

Carrier 58SS Clicking Sound The furnace runs. However it is making an intermittent sound that appears to be coming from an area that according to a pdf of the furnace contains the Gas Control Dial and the Gas Control Valve. The noise it makes sounds like a clicking noise or a dial turning. When it makes this sound the burners will diminish a bit and then come back on full force. We had a professional come out yesterday but since it wasn't making the noise when he was here he wasn't sure what the problem was. If you look at the pdf of the furnace the noise sounds like it's coming from #3 and #9 on the diagram. Here's a link to the pdf: http://www.docs.hvacpartners.com/idc.../58ss-2p~1.pdf We're wondering if anyone might have an idea what is going on? Thanks very much.

Measure the voltage to Terminals #2 and #3 on the main gas valve. If the voltage remains consistent while you hear the sound and the burners diminish slightly, the problem will be your main gas valve. If the voltage fluctuates, you will have to trace it back through the wiring to see through which switch you are losing it.
If this furnace has a hot surface ignitor with flame sensor, try cleaning the flame sensor with some emory cloth.

I hope you find this information to be very helpful as a good starting off point for you.

Please leave a rating. :-)

Clicking noise as furnace tries to start

If you have a gas or fuel oil furnace, that is your igniter trying to light the fuel. If it does it for a few seconds and quits without lighting the furnace, there may be no fuel getting to the burner. Check for fuel supply - oil tank empty? gas line turned off? etc

Multiple clicking sounds coming from AC unit before AC unit turns on or before furnace turns on.

the is a 24v wire that feeds from your thermostat to your unit, inside there is a contactor that engages, this makes a click sound as it really is a basic mechanical part the makes metal touch metal to allow current to flow through the system, perfectly normal, your hearing the low voltage engage the highvoltage at the contactor.

FURNACE MAKES STRANGE INTERMITTENT CLICK SOUND

Looks like an older system. Tighten all of your electrical connections. Inspect all of the low voltage wiring for any insulation cracks or other damage. The problem you describe sounds like something is either "shorting" or breaking down electrically. Unless the technician can catch it while he/she is there, it will be difficult to determine exactly what is happening. You might get lucky and resolve it yourself by tightening all electrical connections and reinsulating (use electrical tape) any damaged low voltage wire connections. If you continue to experience problems, get the tech. Hopefully the last company you used will be willing to work with you on the bill considering they were unable to "catch" it during the last visit.

Without being there with toolbox in hand, I hope you find this information very helpful moving forward. :-)

Carrier super saver furnace keeps going on and off

Sounds like the flame sensor is dirty or bad. This sits in the burner flame when the burners are running. This usually has a single white wire connected to the back of it.

Intertherm propane furnace makes popping sound when running

It sounds like you have a possible hole in the heat exchanger. Turn the heat off and turn the fan on. If you feel any air coming back out of the heat exchanger, you have a hole. A yellow flame is not a good sign. I would even consider having a service professional come out and take a look.

Furnace runs OK, but blower runs again a few seconds later

Could be a defective thermostat in the plenum.
When a gas furnace shuts down the fan(blower) will run until the plenum cools to the safe range. Usually 1 and 1/2 minutes.
Intermittent operation is a defective thermostat or relay.
