Retrieving files from external HD

Hi, I purchased a Seagate 500G External Firewire HD for Mac
back in early Nov. A couple of days ago I turned it on and the familiar icon wouldn't appear on my desktop. Have tried unplugging and restarting but no luck. Have got tons of photos etc. stored on it that I really don't want to lose!
Any suggestions on how to retrieve my files?

The solution will not work as I didn't receive a CD with this unit.

Yes, it lights up and I can hear it spin up. Been having
a bit of a suspicious anomoly with my other partitioned
internal HDs appearing on desktop though...not always,
but once in a while. Eventually they appear after a few
minutes. Guess the only way I'm gonna know for sure
is to take it somewhere and test it on another PC.

    Thanks,
    Marley

Can you hear the HD spin up when you plug it in?

For a MAC to use an external Hard drive, the hard drive has to be formatted FAT32 file system. That is the only file system MAC sees.

Itunes messed up my external hardrive

I doubt that iTunes really moved/reorganized files on your computer.

iTunest may have created its own "Table Of Contents", presenting a "view" of all your files.

Open "My Computer" and open your external hard-drive.
The files should be in "your" order.

Open "My Documents". Open "My Music".
The files should be in "your" order.

If iTunes really did "reorganize" your files, there's no way to "go back", because "Windows System Restore" does not automatically created time-stamped backups of your 'My Documents' folder (nor of any external disk-drive -- where would it put that much data???).

I have a 500g external simple drive. i am getting a message that i can only read on my mac.

Copy all the data onto your Mac computer.

Take the external drive to a PC computer, and "reformat" it, using "quick format".

Take the external drive back your Mac computer,
and write all the "saved" files onto the drive.

I called apple about this and they said there is no mac driver, that a mac should read a seagate external hard drive without any driver. My file system was ntfs.

Help!

You have not yet formatted the drive to work with you MAC. You will need to use your MAC's Disk Utility to format the drive in order to write to the drive, but be aware that formatting will erase everything already on the external drive, so back up anything on the drive you want to keep first.

Help retrieving files from simpletech 320gb hard drive!

I have to admit I haven't used a Mac since high-school, but I can tell you that my first thought on this problem was "file system".

Most external HD's are formatted to be used on a Windows PC, and many are even formatted as NTFS. If this is the case, last I heard anyways, Mac OS doesn't support NTFS.

My suggestion is to use either machine to format the external HD (**you will lose all data on it**) as a neutral file system. By that I mean one which will work on both operating systems.

I could be wrong about this, and Mac OS may support NTFS, but if that's the case somone will be kind enough to correct me.

Maxtor OneTouch II 300Gb can't recover data after a system restore

Hi,

I had the same problem a few weeks ago.

The way I solved my problem was to make sure when I restored Windows to the default settings that I did it up to the same support packs and hot fixes then when backing up the system with the Maxtor HD. It took me many days to figure this out... was written it the Maxtor HD documentation and it works fine.

Hope this helps.
