GE top freezer fridge forming ice on wall of freezer

I bought this fridge used about 4 years ago. It has worked fine up to a few months ago. Now the ice forms on the back wall of the freezer on the right side. I can thaw it and it works good for a month or so, then the fridge no longer cools very well. Can I replace the defrost clock and thermostate myself and is that the problem?

the problem now is that I cannot figure out how to get the back panel off the freezer in order to replace the parts.

  • Omom Apr 26, 2008

I could hear the fan and even the sizzle but still get the frost. it is a GE top freezer older model tbx24zkbr. I cannot get the back panel off. What is the secret?

  • Omom Apr 26, 2008

I guess ill close down for the day. I still need to get that back panel out of the freezer. Its a ge top freezer model tbx24zkbr. I guess that is an older model but should be the same disassembly. If you can help with that which is the main problem I will accept. I have the answer to the ice forming, but not to disassembling the back panel.

my only problem is how to get the back panel off so I can install a new timer. Any suggestions.

Hi the thermostat could be the cause of your problem but check the temp of the compressor put your hand on it and it should be about room temp any hotter and this needs replacing also look on the pipes at back where they run on the outside check as much as you can and see if it has any frost on any of these pipes.
As its forming on one side then it might not be thermo but check compressor first and make sure its not running hot ok then get back to us

Can you just check for me if yours has a fan cuz if it does then this could cause the problem your having if the fan has stopped working.
Could you please give model number please then i can see exactly what unit you have ok

  • paul proctor Apr 26, 2008

Hi check when you open the door you can hear a fan and please give make and model as it makes our job easier at finding your fault

  • paul proctor Apr 26, 2008

Also having the freezer packed with food stops the air from circulating as it should be and can also cause the problem your having please get back to us with the model number thanks

  • paul proctor Apr 26, 2008

Also check the door seal is not damaged if the ice is forming on the side but nearer to the door then it could be that the seal is causing you the problem your having, you can remedy this by rubbing vasaline around all the door seal this will prolong the life of the seal and should solve the problem if it is this thats causing the problem.

Anyway you got several things to check now so should keep you busy for a while get back to me when you have checked the places i told you about.
Let me know how you get on and let us know the outcome of anything ive asked.
This helps us narrow down the problem and helps us rule certain problems out then we can give you a better idea of the exact cause of your problem

Why are only drawers in fridge cold & not making ice?

Contact a professional. Sounds like either your damper door is not operating correctly and not letting enough cool air from the freezer enter, or there is an air leak that is making ice form .

GE GSS25WGMCC, Ice Forming On Freezer Interior Surfaces

i had the same problem and i replaced the defrost heater and it worked fine for about one month but now having the same issue. Most of the time from what I have heard it is the defrost heater (about $60 part). I might have another issue going on with mine like a defrost thermostat. Your defrost heater is right under the panel on the inside of the freezer section. remove white panel on back side of freezer section and remove two screws and two wires and replace it and you should be fine.

Refrigerator will not get cold, but freezer works

Make sure your fan is working ,its located behind the freezers back wall. If it is working the vent from the freezer down to the refrigerator may be blocked (usually with ice). With out a fan you have no circulation but your freezer may look likes its working,it may last 3 days. Also if you can move everything out unplug it turn it off w/ doors open untill all traces of ice are gone this will free up any clogged tubes. Good luck.
