Canon 40d camera will only shoot in manual mode

Using your fingernail, push in the lens contact pins in the bottom of the mirror box several times. Sometimes they get tarnished and make poor contact with the flexible circuit under them. Doing this scrapes off the tarnish.

Screws come loose from the bottom circuit board and short it out. It contains the flash circuit so a short can throw 300 plus volts into a 6 volt circuit, damaging components. The lens contacts flex attaches to this circuit board. This is a common problem.

Impact can cause flexible circuits to either come loose from their connectors or have one side pull out so some of the lands on the flex don't make contact. Did you drop the camera?

Tip

A tip and suggestion on using any digital camera.

One of the most two important tips in my experience with digital cameras and the use of them is in the following.
When using a digital camera always take the time to put the hand cord on your wrist. This will help to insure that the camera will not be dropped when using any where, including over or near water. By the way, using any digital camera near water should be done carefully. Water is extremely damaging to the delicate internal parts.
When the digital camera is not in use, always be sure to put the camera in a padded case. I know that it takes more time than dropping into a purse or pocket, but if you take the extra time, you will enjoy your digital camera a lot longer.
By dropping a camera into a purse, you will take the chance of the unit being damaged by other items and possibly turning on from pressure of some item on the on button. This can cause the camera's lens to extend and since it is in a compact area, it can become damaged.
By putting the digital camera into a pocket, you take the chance of the camera falling out and being damaged. It is surprising how many cameras I have had which have been dropped and damaged.

3/4 of my camera screen is all white and i don't know what could have happened to it because i haven't dropped it, but it has been in my purse for a long time, but nothing in my purse is heavy...

Possible that the LCD screen has failed. You can take images and load them to the PC.,If the images are clean then the LCD is a suspect. remove the battery for sometime and reset. If the fault occurs as a blank screen then the LCD must be taken out and checked for possible damage.

Dropped in river for about 5 minutes. Later tried to blow(with mouth) all the water I could out. Is it savable? I charged battery but it doesn't turn on now..Any thoughts or help? Also put camera in...

Hello
Ron

Well, the camera was submerged for 5 minutes as you said, at this point we are talking about a whole circuit blowing/short circuit.

If you are so lucky, it is only the circuit, then you might have to look at the CCD's, and this is just to name i few.

You can try putting your camera into a sealed container filled with 2 cups of rice for about 24 hours. If that doesn't work, it's done.

Sorry.

Kind regards
Andrea

My wonderful little sony cyber-shot got drenched when my water bottle spilled in my purse. It was in my purse about 5 minutes when I discovered it wet. I took it out and laid it in my car seat to dry it...

Every time you try to turn on a camera that still has water in it, you fry the circuits. You should have removed the battery and card, dried as much as you could and then buried the camera in a bowl of dry rice for a week before even thinking of trying it.

My child spilt soda in my purse and my canon powershot sd770 is digital elph was in it. I quikly dried it off and then powerd it up and it seemed fine, later that evening I powerd it up again and it...

Powering up a wet camera usually shorts out the circuits. Soda gets sticky as it dries and further complicates matters. Still later, the corrosive activity of the acid in the soda will eat its way through the circuits. I don't hold out much hope for your camera but if you want to take it in for repair and are willing to pay the expected high cost, go for it.

Cracked screen

Hi

The warranty covers manufacturing defects and such, camera stops working completely etc, cracked screen is not one of those things.

You must have dropped your purse or something must have pressed on the screen and caused it to crack.

I think they will charge you for a new screen.

Cracked Camera

This depends on your warranty, if it covers cracks and the product being dropped I'm sure they will give you a new one to replace it, or find parts to repair it.

Z20fd got wet in my daughter's purse

If an electronic device gets wet or is submerged, DO NOT TRY TO TURN IT ON! In most instances, this short circuits/damages the device. If you let the device dry for 3 to 10 days, it may clear of moisture, and work without short circuiting. If the device was immersed in fresh-water, that is.

If it was immersed in salt water, the likelihood of damage and failure is almost guaranteed.
