When I first got this printer I was really confused too because they didn't slip in like normal cartridges. You have to push them in with the end furthest from you tilted up, then lift the end closest to you so that its angle changes to a more horizontal position, and it should click.

It's a bit like those off kettles where instead of flicking its switch down to turn it on, you have to lift it up.

I got this message on the display (canon pixma mp170): "check ink u051"The cartridge is completely new and original. What can I do? Thank you in advance.

MP170 can only accept PG40, PG50, Cl41 & CL51 only. Please check the cartridge model correctly. if problem still persist, ask for replacement for the faulty cartridge.

Canon PIXMA MP170 wiont print with non-canon cardridge

yes you should
Most of the canon printers works only with canon cartredges and the canon company ends the warranty agreement when discovering that.

my advice: use the better quality and the Original ink (Canon Cartredges).

PIXMA MP170

I got that same message and, in desperation, read the manual. It turns out I had skipped the last step in installing the ink cartridge: "Push up on the cartridge until it clicks into place". When I opened the printer back up and pushed the cartridges up, they did indeed click into place, and the error went away.
