1. Reset or restore your iPod for a try, this can fix many general iPod problems. 2. You may try this iTunes alternative, I always use it to upload music and video to my iPod once my iTunes can't recognize my iPod, my friends recommend it to me, it's safe and works pretty well, you can also use it to copy music and video from ipod to computer for backup, it's useful when you lost your iTunes library. 3. Update your iTunes to the latest version. Plug in your iPod. If iTunes can't recognize it, then in iTunes in the top left corner click help> run diagnostics. On the box that comes up, check the last two things. Click next and it should identify your iPod. I got this method from Apple technical support. Hope it helps. My i-pod touch has frozen and when i connect it to my laptop a symbol of u usb and itunes sign come up? I cant restore it to factory settings either because it isnt showing up in itunes

You need to do a complete restoral. Try This:

Try plugging it into your computer. Press and hold both the sleep and home buttons
at the same time until the screen goes black (can take longer than 10 seconds) then
let go of the sleep button (the button on the top of the unit) while keeping the
home button held in (the button on the front of the iPod). Keep the home button
held in until your computer recognizes new hardware. You should hear some sort of
sound coming from your computer speakers. That and the "installing new hardware"
notice should come up in your taskbar (this is where you computer shows the clock).
Let go of the home button once this happens. Open up iTunes and then restore it.

When i got done chrging my ipod it froze

Important: If your iPod is frozen or won't turn on, it may be because iPod is paused or the Hold switch is in the locked position. If so, a lock symbol appears on the screen. Slide the Hold switch to the unlocked position and check the screen.

Resolution If you experience any of the above issues, try the following steps:
  1. Toggle the Hold switch. To do this, slide the switch to Hold (an orange bar appears) and then slide it back (orange bar is hidden).
  2. Reset the iPod by holding down the Menu and Center buttons for 10 seconds.
    • If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect the iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If the iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
    • If the Apple logo does not appear or the iPod is not seen in iTunes, connect the iPod to a power source by either plugging it into an Apple iPod USB Power Adapter or directly into a computer's USB port.
  3. Let the iPod charge for at least 20 minutes. Note: If the iPod is connected to a computer, make sure the computer does not sleep, standby, or hibernate during the 20-minute charging period.
  4. After the iPod has charged for at least 20 minutes and while it is still connected to the power source, toggle the Hold switch again as in step 1.
  5. Try resetting the iPod by holding down the Menu and Center buttons for 10 seconds.
    • If the Apple logo appears on the display, connect the iPod to a computer and verify that it appears in iTunes and can play music. If the iPod appears in iTunes and can play music, no further troubleshooting is needed.
    • If the Apple logo does not appear or the iPod is not seen in iTunes, try putting the iPod into disk mode and restoring.
  6. Try putting the iPod into disk mode.
    • While in disk mode, connect the iPod to iTunes and try to restore.
    • If the iPod is still not recognized by iTunes, the iPod should be serviced.

New iPod Nano 4G won't connect to iTunes.

Hi Paige,

  • First reset the device by pressing and holding Menu & Select till the apple symbol appears
  • Next check the USB port on both the PC and ipod are clear of dust etc.
  • Download and install the latest iTunes from the Apple site.
  • Connect the ipod to a USB port directly on the back of your PC (ie, not a USB hub or keyboard etc.)
  • If iTunes recognises it (properly or improperly) and suggests an ipod software update, do this.
  • On the main ipod page of iTunes press the restore button and choose the bottom option (if it gives you any) to restore the ipod to manufacturers settings.
  • After a couple of restarts once its done it should be fine.
All the best
