After a second night in 6 months of playing charade with my MP550 I found the same simple solution back again: PRESS RESUME/CANCEL BUTTON AND OK BUTTON at the same time for 5 seconds.

Just posting this so I'll find in a couple of months or so...

There is no way to reset the chip in the cartridges and almost all MP canon models have problems when you refill the cartridges ..the issue is to try to reset the counter ,the printer itself..but I can tell you that this have almost no chances to work ..The actual solve that you have to keep in target is to find and buy cartridges for it without the counter chip inside..In this way you will be able to refill them and use..
I tell you all that not to disappoint you but just from experience and to not try in vain ..Those pixma MP models are built in this way to avoid use of low quality ink ...and to increase sells on their original products..an I know that if you buy a few times new cartriges ..you practically buy the printer again ..but if you do not find no chip cartridges to fit ..this is the situation..

Our retailers (i.e. Costco, Frys Electronics, Best Buy Canada) always reset the ink cartridge with a special Canon resetter after the cartridge is refilled.

With respect to Canon MP550 color usage during greyscale printing: Unfortunately, with many of the newer inkjet printer models & printer drivers, printing in greyscale actually consumes more color ink than normal draft printing. If you wish to save on color ink, it is suggested to do one of the following as available in your specific printer driver/software:

-Print in Normal - Draft mode (or super draft if available), plain paper.
-Print in Black & White mode only* - Draft mode on plain paper (typically this is the best way to save on ink/printing costs).
-For internet page printing, print using CleanPrint (3rd party software for printing most internet-based content from all major internet browsers. NOTE: not affiliated with Inkjet411):http://www.formatdynamics.com/cleanprint-4-0/
-Keep printer on at all times; power up cycles typically consume large amounts of ink (per Consumer Reports, Aug 2013 issue).

    * Most printer models will still consume a small percentage of color ink due to normal ink/printer maintenance, such as between job 'spitting'. The purpose is to ensure the printhead is maintained to avoid clogging.

Regarding Canon 220 or 221 cartridge repurchase or ink cartridge refilling, if you unable to find a retail / refill store close to you and you are trying to cut ink costs, may we suggest you try a remanufactured ink cartridge from http://www.inkplicity.com/ as their ink cartridges typically have the lowest cost in the USA, have a high reliability rating, come with a 1-year warranty and provide free shipping for all orders above $20 (available to US residents only).

Reset ink level on canon mg2120 after ink refill

The following procedures may be used to reset the Canon printer ink level monitoring following the installation of a refilled Canon 30, 31, 40, 41, 50, 51, 210, 211, 240, or 241 integrated ink cartridges. In most cases, the error/alert will need to be cleared to enable printing. Ink waste container reset procedures are also provided below.
NOTE: for multi-cartridge installation, the procedure(s) may need to be repeated twice.

For PGI-5, PGI-9PBK, CLI-8, PGI-220 CLI-221 PGI-225 CLI-226 PGI-250 CLI-251 Cartridges: These are new Canon cartridges which have an embedded chip on each cartridge. If you just refill the ink, the printer will still reads the cartridge as empty. You have two choices:

Purchase a "refillable cartridge" from www.asapinkjets.com
BCH or other sellers. These refillable cartridges have an auto-reset chip (non OEM) and will reset automatically.
Use a chip resetter (e.g., search Canon + model number + resetter on eBay). Follow the instruction below to refill your original cartridge, and use the resetter to reset the chip.

An error appear in lcd screen of canon Mp550 is 5b00 please send to me an urgent soluation

If you encounter "Error Code 5B00" it means that the Printer Counter Protection is Full and it required a reset and Ink absorber replacement, if you want your printer to work again. There are two ways to reset the Canon MP printer, One is by using a Software tool and the other is manually resetting the EEPROM of the printer. Below is the step by step procedure on how to reset your Canon printer.

1. Using MPtool Software to reset Canon MP Printer
Turn of printer then run mptool software this software automatically detect the printer.
Click reset main and reset platen button in the waste ink counter section.
If you want to reset the cartridge ink level, click reset black and reset color in the ink counter section.

2. Manual Reset of the printer
Turn off the Printers.
Press and Hold the button Resume/Cancel then press POWER button.
Release the Resume/Cancel button while keeping POWER button on press.
Press Resume/Cancel 2 times and then release all the buttons.
When the indicator recorded GREEN - click Resume/Cancel 4 times!
Turn off and On the Canon Pixma MP Printers. And your done.

How to reset printer canon 8180

1.Attain an ink cartridge chip resetting device from a computer electronics retail store or an online retailer. These portable devices resets the cartridge chip so your printer recognizes the cartridge as being full.

2.Remove the cartridge from the printer by opening the top tray and taking the cartridge out of the carrier holder.

3.Line up the pins on the resetting device and the chip on the ink cartridge, then connect them together, making sure the connection is firm.

4.Hold the resetting device and ink cartridge chip in place, for about 10 seconds, until the LED light on the device turns green. This means the cartridge was successfully reset. Afterward, remove the device from the cartridge.

5.Place the cartridge back in the printer's ink cartridge carrier holder and print a test page.

When refilling canon ip4500 cartridge they still show empty

I'm sorry you got that STUPID answer first. The Canon cartridges you use have a chip or small circuit board on the bottom front. You have to either reset that chip or get the reset chips from the place you get your ink. That little chip tells your printer how much ink has been used and once they are empty refilling doesn't help without a new or reset chip.

Waste ink full

This step is a "reset" step for the Canon CLI8 cartridges. The original Canon CLI8 cartridges have a memory chip on the back of the cartridge, which sends a signal to the printer when the cartridge is empty. Your printer won't be able to determine how much ink is in the compatible cartridges, but you can easily monitor the ink level by noticing the ink level drop in the cartridge as you print (the cartridges are see-through), or by noticing low ink output on the printed pages when you run out of ink. The "reset" procedure below is the best procedure we know of to date to allow your printer to use Uni-Kit cartridges which offer a tremendous savings over the Original Canon products.

With the original chip now attached to the compatible cartridge (you may need double sided tape to get the chip to stick well to the cartridge), and with the cartridge now in the printer, Press and hold the Reset/OK Button for 5 seconds to reset the chips.

  1. The "Ink Low" dialog box will pop up (similar to photo 1 below)
  2. Continue to print until the "ink has run out" dialog box pops up (similar to photo 2 Below) Click "OK" to continue to print.
  3. The "Ink Low" dialog box may reappear, if so repeat the first 2 steps
  4. Then the "once empty" dialog box will pop up (similar to photo 3 Below) Click "Yes" to continue to print
  5. The "Not Liable" dialog box will pop up (similar to photo 4 below). Click "Yes" to continue to print
  6. Continue to print until the "remaining level of ink" dialog box pops up (similar to photo 5 Below) Click "OK" to continue to print
  7. Another dialog box will pop up with the "press and hold the Resume" or "press and hold the Paper Feed" button (similar to photo 6). Press and hold the "STOP/RESET" button (for Canon MP Series) or "PAPER FEED" button (for Canon IP Series) for 5 seconds. DO NOT Click "Back" or "Cancel Printing"
  8. The "Ink Monitor" dialog box will appear and the printer will continue to print. (similar to photo 7) In the event that that the "press and hold the Resume " dialog box pops up again, Press and hold the Paper Feed Button or Stop/Reset Button for 5 seconds
