Question about Epson Stylus R380 InkJet Photo Printer

1 Answer

R380, after working flawlessly for a couple years with a CISS, suddenly refuses to recognize CISS, cartridges. Service utility does nothing. Keeps coming back to the same error message....cannot recognize cartridges. What to do?

CISS cartridges still connect to a modified ink cartridge. So, it is like the ink outside goes to the modified ink cartridge inside via small tubes. Most of the ink cartridges actually has a chip on it which in time degrades as well. What you could do is try to have the modified ink cartridge replaced.

I hope this helps.

A bit more info on the problem. All six cartridges are unrecognized by the printer. As mentioned, this system has worked flawlessly for a number of years, doing beautiful work. Suddenly, in the middle of a print job, the printer decided that it no longer recognized the CISS cartridges. Funny thing. The computer was on and connected to the Internet (something rare for this system) when the malfunction occurred. Could Epson have slipped a message to my printer to stop functioning with my CISS? I have cleaned all of the chips to no avail. I have reset the cartridges at least five times, to no avail. I have tried everything my service utility has to offer, to no avail. Any more suggestions?

Epson could not send you any firmware update or any modifications to its firmware without your permission. It is always up to the customer to do that. This kind of problem is not really unheard of when using CISS and all of these problems are fixed by changing the old modified cartridges with newer ones. You have said that this has been working for a couple of years now. I think its about that time to change it.

    I hope this helps.

I put a new set of Epson cartridges in the printer...with the same result. It refuses to recognize them too. Plus I have criss crossed controls and worked every possible angle of the service utility program. No matter what I do, this R380 refuses to acknowledge that it has cartridges. Am I now dealing with a piece of junk....the printer....that I need to replace, or is there another angle to shake hell out of this dude? It was functioning beautifully....printing extraordinarily good quality. Suddenly, when it was on and idle for a spell, it decided that it no longer had acceptable cartridges. Those CISS cartridges have been in there....working fine....from early on. And, I cleaned the chips on them. Still no luck. Any more ideas. ken

Did you replace all the ink cartridges. Each one would have a chip on it. One or two may be faulty. If you replaced all the ink cartridges then most likely this is already a hardware issue. It could already be the printer board since it is not able to distinguish your ink cartridge. If so, you would need to have your printer checked by a local technician.

How to reset 73/91 Cartridges for Epson CX5500

SSC utility is used for resetting waste ink counter, not for ink level counter (chip at ink tank). If you wish to reset ink level counter (chip), you must use hardware resetter, or use CISS chip with autoreset function.

Ciss ink won't work on hp c7280

Must use included HP "starter ink" cartridges before the CISS can work. There's a 3-button sequence [OK-Cancel-Black Button] sequence when powering on that will reset the printer and bypass the "starter ink" wall you're hitting

Generic carts are sometimes not recognized. Epson's chips are the cause. I solved this problem for a small investment. I purchased a CISS system for about $75.00 [ink included], that's the cost of OEM carts that do not last very long. The CX9400Fax is an Ink Hog, which is why the printer is so cheap. If you want a CISS go to They are great if you need help and will call you back in less than an hour. Get the Waste Ink Kit when ordering the CISS.
