How do you type characters when setting up your email etc.

You will discover the @ character above the apostrophe on the r/h side of the keyboard. Press and hold down the shift key and all the dual purpose keys will become the alternative characters as printed on the keys.

The dot or full stop, or period as the Americans call it, is at the bottom r/h of the keyboard and the shift key isn't needed.

What is an illegal character?

illegal character is which is not recognized by the software. For instance, you have some box to type number, and you type something like $#@$. So these becomes illegal characters. Sometimes if you have copied some text from some other editor and pasted in such text box, it may say so even when you do not see anything out of place. This is when there exists some character which may be invisible to naked eye. Something like a special character like newline, tab etc. In such situations its recommended to hand type the text instead if possible.

My toshiba laptop is typing wrong characters but my wireless tevion keyboard is o k. Is there a solution to this ?

Sounds like the laptop keyboard went bad and thats why its typing wrong characters. Best way to verify this is to use a USB keyboard on the laptop, if the USB keyboard is typing the correct keys then you know the laptop keyboard is bad. If the USB keyboard is typing the wrong keys as well then you know its a setting in windows that is causing the keys to type wrong characters.

Typing and appearance on screen of letters typed is sporadic, non responsive. Typing in Word or any other site is normal - only happens when typing an email in Yahoo.

Hello,
Try to configure the character set used by default (language etc.). Server may be too busy also. Type your Email message in Word or Notepad, Select all CTRL A, copy CTRL C. Go to the Email window and CTRL V paste.
Hope it helps.

The keyboard characters does not correspond to what appears on sc

Does it type " by any chance when you press the @ key? if so this is usually because keyboard input is set to the wrong language in the regional & language settings are wrong in the control panel. try pressing the left alt key & shift at same time first this is a quick key to change between input languages.
