Question about Computers & Internet

How do I set my Linksys router back to the factory default. It worked great till I decided to ''try'' to make it secure and had to type in all kinds of addresses. Now I am able to connect to the router with an ''excellent'' connection, but it will not connect to the internet now. This is a Linksys Wireless -G 2.4 GHz 54 Mbps Broadband Router. Model is WRT54G

Remove the power jack and with a toothpick, sharpened pencil or other makeshift device you can come up with, push the small inset "reset button" in the back of the router and hold for at least 10-15 seconds (count slowly). When you plug it back in, the original factory settings will be restored. If not, repeat the same steps, just hold the button in longer.

Reset Button

Note:

Resetting the router to the factory defaults will delete any changes you have made to the router, including any security settings. This should be used as a last resort.
The first method involves simply pressing a button located on the back of the router. The image below (courtesy of Linksys) shows where the button is located.

Lost security code for wireless linksys router

Hi alockklock2,

If you want to obtain the password or security on your router you need to access the Wireless Settings Page. To access the router page you need a working computer that is connected to the router. To access the router page just open a browser then type 192.168.1.1, the Default username is blank and the password is admin. Go to the Wireless Tab select Wireless Security under the Security Mode you will see there Network Key or Passphrase. The Network Key serves as a password or security code on your network to make it secure.

You can also reset the router to its factory state but you need to keep in mind that all settings will be back to its default settings. To reset the router press and hold the small reset button at the back of the router using a Pen or a Paper Clip for 15-30 seconds.

If this works dont forget to say thanks. Thanks for using Fixya.

I'm trying to re hook up my Linksys BEFSR41 Cable/DSL Router after 4 years. I go thru all the steps from the CD and get stuck where they ask me fir a password. I type in ADMIN snf t goes thru the cycle...

Try this: reset your router to the factory settings by holding down the reset button while the router is plugged in for 30 seconds. Once it's done, your default username and password will be admin. Connect your router to a computer via ethernet cable, open internet explorer, firefox, safari, etc. doesn't really matter which browser you use and type in the address bar 192.168.1.1 and press Enter. it will ask for a username and a password, type admin for both.
Now you have accessed your router(don't worry about the CD). Go to wireless and then wireless security and select WPA2 Personal as your encryption type then choose a password, it's has to be at least 8 characters long(letters, number or both). Hit Save settings on the bottom. You now have a secured wireless network. Connect your cable/DSL modem to your router, reset the router by unplugging it and plugging it back in and wait till both your modem and router are up. Now try to connect and you should be able to go online :)
Good luck and let us know how that worked out for you ;)

I forget my linksys wrt160N password. how can i open that.

In case you have forgotten the password,
ALL YOU CAN DO IS TO RESET THE ROUTER TO FACTORY SETTINGS
You may reset router to factory setting from the reset button on the back side of the router. It may be a push botton or else use a paper pin to press the button for few seconds, the lights on the front would blink and the router would restart with factory setting. Please not that ALL SETTING WOULD BE LOST...AND YOU WOULD HAVE TO MAKE CONFIGURATIONS AND SETTING ALL OVER AGAIN

HOPE IT HELPS...Let me know if you need any further assistance

I purchased a used linksys wireless router. It is security enabled and I don't know how to remove the security or disable the security

Model?? Most Linksys routers have a reset button on the back, through a small hole.
I strongly recommend you download the manual from the Linksys website

I have a linksys wireless wrt54g router. has been working fine. can no longer get the wireless connection. have reset several times and when i type 192.168.1.1 in the browser i do not get the default...

There should be a reset button on the back of the router ( check your manual) and this will reset the router to factory default.
This will wipe all previous configurations setting in the router.
Here is the Linksys site to get the manual or instruction set:\

Can't get router to reset encryption key

Hello,

Look for a reset button or a small hole somewhere on the sides of router. It will say reset next to it. Plug the router in the power source (socket) and Press the reset (if button), or use a paper clip to push inside the reset hole. Your router will reset everything to factory defaults.

Hope it helps.

Router

Can the laptop see the router at all? When you try to connect do you see the router's SSID? Does it connect?

Have you altered any of the router's settings or is it set up like factory default? Did you enable wireless security?

Assuming the router is set up like factory default, try this. On the laptop Start->Run then type "command" (with no quotes) and click on OK. A black window will pop up. Type the following:

ping 192.168.1.1

If you can provide some of this info maybe we can help.
