Machine will not start. Only button on the control panel that works is the "Cancel/Drain" button witch starts the drain cycle. Then shuts off. Checked door latch switch, OK. Checked float, is free and clear of debris. Please help?

Could you run a diagnostic test for me and let me know what happens? It takes about 10 minutes and will shut off at the end of it.

It should do the following:

Fill with water for 2 minutes,
Main motor for 2 minutes
Drain motor for up to 6 minutes

You can push cancel when it gets to the drain part since we know that works.

To enter the dianosis mode make sure the cancel is not lit up, if so push it again until off. Then push the following keys all within 5 seconds.

    No response to button sequence.

  • Philip May 13, 2010

Unfortunately this would lead me to believe we have a bad control panel. I will look up the part and get right back to you.

  • darrenschroe May 13, 2010

I have tried the button sequence several times. No button illumination or anything. even tried unpluging for several minutes then sequence again. No response. Next step.

I will refer the image below and the ( ) numbers on the image, feel free to contact me when making the repair and I can answer any questions you might have.

    - Turn the circuit breaker off or unplug the power cord to the dishwasher.

    - On the bottom of the front panel (19) you will take out 2 screws. The panel will slide down about 1/2" and the slots that the red arrow is pointing to on panel (19) will come out from the frame(8). Put aside

    - Remove the screw in panel (6) that the red arrow is pointing to.

    - Open the dishwasher door and remove all 8 screws that hold the inner door (not shown) to the frame (8), remove the inner or tip it up against the dishwasher while you hold the door frame down.

    - Cover (16) will snap off, you will see a small slot on either end that you can put a flat screwdriver into if needed.

    - Remove the wires from the module (3) and the ribbon cable that comes from the control panel (6).

    - The control panel should now come off. Set it aside and transfer any seals or springs from the old to the new

    - Reverse this process to reassemble

  • darrenschroe May 13, 2010

Cool. Thanks man got to find out if the landlord will spring for the repair cost. Can you suggest a parts site?

  • Philip May 13, 2010

This may sound strange, but I would start with Whirlpool directly, they may be able to get you the best price. I have not used any sites that advertise on here but I know they are reputable. Maybe just shop a couple and see what the prices look like.

Sorry I am not much help on the shopping end of a repair. :-)

  • darrenschroe May 13, 2010

Thats cool. figured id try. Thanks again for the help.

  • Philip May 13, 2010

    No problem, take care

My kenmore diswasher model 665 15772 - lock button is flashing - dishwasher will not start. Can you help me?

6/3 I bought a Kenmore Ultra Wash dishwasher, Model 665. As many others have posted, my dishwasher also do does not automatically drain, leaving about 3" of water in the bottom of the machine. The only way to pump the water from the machine is to use the Drain/Cancel button, which cancels the cycle, and the dry option, leaving the dishes wet and spotty.

I just contacted a tech rep with Sears Repair and was told this is a Factory Defect with this model. Whirlpool (manufacturer) is aware of the problem and working on a resolution. Meanwhile, Whirlpool (via Sears and K-Mart) offers a free service call to install the "retrofit kit" that should solve the problem.

Even though Sears is aware of this problem, you will be expected to jump through their hoops - did you install a disposal at the same time and knock out the plug (FYI - if the plug is not knocked out, the Drain/Cancel option will not work and the machine will not drain at all). They will also ask if there is anything blocking the drain (FYI - if there is a foreign material block of any kind, the Drain/Cancel option will not work and the machine will not drain.

If this dishwasher (Model 665) does not drain automatically, THIS IS A FACTORY DEFECT. A retrofit kit is available to correct. In the DC Metro area, the wait time for an in home service call is three weeks.

If you have this problem, call Sears 1-800-4MY HOME and schedule a FREE retrofit kit installation

ALSO, call your sales person, and the appliance dept manager, at the store where you purchased the appliance to let them know this product is defective.

Whirlpool dishwasher won't start

I have had the same problem with my dishwasher. I.e., the buttons don't respond (no LED) when you press them. Only the "Cancel/Drain" light works and the dishwasher reacts to cancel/drain. I found a diagnostic in the kick panel that has you press; "heated dry, normal, heated dry, normal" within 6 seconds and the washer goes through a diagnostic. All of the tests perform as they should and at the end the washer works again. I don't know why unless doing this resets the circuit board. Does anyone know?
