HP really messed up with some series of laptops that use amd processors and nvidia chipsets like the F500 and F700, in latin america, where I live, they never provided a solution and in the US, Canada and other countries a product call back was made but not all the users were informed and it's no longer in effect, so what you can do is repair your laptop, I'll tell you how.

You will need:
-presario F700 service manual (google it, you'll find it easily)
-heat gun or hair dryer
-a penny
-thermal silicone grease

I know it sounds like something MacGyver would do, but it helped me with several presarios F500 that wouldnt turn on. I'll explain a little so you can see why this actually works. The computer will stop turning on, in some cases wi-fi will absolutely die before, when the computer overheats, to be precise, the nvidia video chip overheats the soldering that holds it in place, when contact is lost the problem appears. So what you need to do is simple, first you need to "re-solder" the chipset, then you need to improve the system to prevent the chip from overheating, thats when the penny is used, as it is made of copper (or so I was told, I'm not american so I couldn't say for sure) it will act as a heat sink for the video chip, copper has great thermal properties.

First thing first, you'll need to follow the instructions on the service manual to dismount the fan/heat sink assembly, be really carefull not to misplace any screw or you'll have a hard time putting all back together. There is a part of the service manual that will require you to dismount the display, carefull, the complete instructions regarding that part will lead you to disassemble completely the display, my advice is, once you remove the screws that hold the display to the rest of the computer you can continue with the top cover (where the touchpad is located).

Once you have the motherboard out, identify and remove the processor as well, the fun begins now, using your heat gun or hair dryer heat the nvidia video chip, thats the one by the processor not the one by the wi-fi card, if you use a heat gun heat it for about 2 minutes you wont need more than that, try to direct the heat only to the nvidia chip, you dont want to de-solder any other components, you can cover the rest of the motherboard with magazines, that helps a little, if you are using the hair dryer make a cardboard cone to redirect the heat to the chip, you'll need to heat it from 10 to 15 minutes depending on your hair dryer, make sure to hold the heat gun or hair dryer at least 4 inches away from the chip, dont apply heat directly.

Once you are done heating the chip, you'll need to press it firmly to put it in place again, you wont feel the difference but simply do it, dont do it with your fingers or you'll burn them, that should do the trick, your computer is now fixed, however if you put it back together just like that it will fail again soon, so we need to improve the heat sink for the video chip.

You need to use the thermal silicone on both sides of the penny, then put the penny over the video chip, as centered as possible and then put the heat sink back on, off course you need to put the processor back on before putting the heat sink back, there is an optional thing to do before putting all the rest back together, you can drill some holes on the base enclosure right where the video chip is located, that will improve ventilation, then follow the instructions to put all back together, after that you can try to turn your computer on and see it turning on like it used to.

This has worked for me several times, I hope it works for you as well, one last advice, update your bios to latest version and get a cooling pad to prevent as much as you can the overheating issue, good luck.

This worked for me! HP wanted $259. Even my wi-fi card is working again after 7 months using a usb external wi-fi. It booted up the first time! I used a hair dryer with a cardboard cone. It was about 4 inches long and the end of the cone was about an inch and quarter. On high for 15 minutes about one inch from the chip. I removed the heat and applied moderate pressure with a piece of wood and held the pressure for about 3-4 minutes. Then I immediatly put the processor back in and then the heat sink with the old penny on the chip and tightened it down while it was still hot so the penny was continuing to hold it while it cooled. After about a half an hour I reassembled my f572us and it booted up. I am writing this message with my fixed f500 thanx to this reply post! I read this reply about 2-3 hours ago and my computer is now fixed. I also cleaned the fan which will help ALOT in cooling. This method is also used to fix PS3's.
This is the best advice I've read in 10 months on how to fix this thing! HP wireless assistant had me swearing constantly! THANK!!! YOU!!!

Thank you very much for this tip. It has helped to fix my F572US with flashing power light, no boot, and wireless card problems. For the first time in months that I can start to use my laptop again and this time it is with the build-in Broadcom card.

Thanks again, you are the best.

In your post, you have mentioned that we should update the bios to the latest version. The BIOS and WinFlash utility available on HP website are for Vista , while I am running Win 7. Can I use that WinFlash to update my bios, from F.18 to F.1F?

    Thanks,

as far as I know BIOS version should run on any computer as it is not a windows based application, i think the winflash should run fine on win 7 if it runs on vista

  • Pomodoro Oct 04, 2010

I went ahead and update the bios with WinFlash for Vista and I got a BSOD in WIn 7. Is there another way to update my laptop bios to F.1F? Thank you.

There is another way to update bios but you will need to read a lot, i haven't tried this procedure which is to manually update your BIOS, you will need to extract the wph file from the bios update file you downloaded and then load that file using a BIOS flashing tool, these tools usually run under DOS so you'll need a bootable usb flash drive too, i've never tried it before so I'm not the right person to ask about this procedure, good luck

Actually, that is what I was lookingfor all along, a DOS based flash utility. I have finally find help from here.

I know that the f700's have a very serious problem with the motherboards going bad within the first year or so. hp is aware of this problem but will not offer any fixes that dont involve sending the pc into them and almost 400 bucks later you will get it back with a new board.

My compaq is power on for 2 second and off , how to fix is thank you

You need to print this out-on someone else's computer. Hope it works for you!
Remove the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord from your Compaq Presario F700 laptop, press and hold the power button for 20 seconds to discharge any residual current inside the Compaq Presario F700 . This clears your RAM and is like a hardware reset. Replace the battery and charger/ac adapter/power cord and turn your Compaq Presario F700 laptop on.

Boot in "safe mode". As it starts up press F8, the computer ask you if you'd like to start in safe mode. Highlight "safe mode" and press enter. See if your laptop is booting up ok .

If your Compaq Presario F700 boots ok, do the following,

Try System Restore first,
Start Menu->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->System Restore. Choose the most recent date before you the encountered problem. If it doesn't work, try the next date.

If System Restore does not fix it, as a last resort, you might need to fdisk, reformat your laptop hard disk clean and reinstall OS, that usually fixes all bugs. Before going that route, try following,

Uninstall unnecessary programs and applications.

Scan with a antivirus program

Scan with a spyware/malware program

DEFRAG C:

CHKDSK C:

Clean up and repair registry problems with registry repair software of your choice

If the problem persists, did you check if it could be your Compaq Presario F700 laptop power cord or power source problem? Defective or insufficient power supply might cause error messages that are misleading. Take the battery out and power on your laptop with the charger only. Make sure your Compaq Presario F700 power jack and charger plug tip are securely connected. Did you notice the power jack loose? You can find laptop power jack on ebay. Fixing and soldering the power jack requires professional skill though. The charger green/blue LED should be on. If not, replace the defective charger. Compaq Presario F700 laptop battery charger, especially its power cord/cable, lifespan is limited and does not last forever, consider buying a lifetime warranty charger online from company like www.topmic.com

Sounds like the power converter. The power input and the battery are single voltage. The computer requires multiple voltages which are generated by a power converter. If you have installed this motherboard, ensure the connections to the power converter are correct.
