Whirlpool et1chmxkt03 having what seems to be a common problem. I am having a large amount of water buildup in the freezer and refrigerator. I emptied the freezer and used a hairdryer to melt the ice in the back. That did not help. It does not have a exterior drain tube. any thoughts

My system does not have water, just ice. Does that change anything. Is there no use in thawing out the refrig and freezer to try and let the drain tube unclog. I take it I can't reach the drain tube my self

  • dawgonit Mar 30, 2008

I tried the hair dryer bit with out success. I will try the hot water also. where does the drain tube go. I know eventually it comes out the bottom of the refrig because there is a catch basin.

HI,

You can remove the shelves and peel off the back cover and clear the drain by pouring hot water on the frozen drain hole. If you have a baster of some sort you could try to squirt the hot water through the venting on the bottom of the panel. Another way to to point a hair dryer on the drain hole. The best method is to remove the shelves and panel and make sure the drain is clear.

Goodluck,
Please don't forget to rate the solution.

you will need to remove the bottom of the freezer, the pan there has 2
screws and it should come out fairly easily.....watch for ice
buildup...this may be holding the bottom tray in place.

You will need to remove all the ice build up in the freezer, the remove
the elbow that carries the water from the freezer into the refrigerator
and out the back wall of the refrigerator and down to the drain pan.
The elbow is in the back-top- center of the refrigerator section, and
    may be frozen in place.

If there is a huge ice buildup in the freezer....it may be easier for
you to unplug the refrigerator and leave it with towels all around it
for a full 24 hours with the doors open, to allow all the ice to melt
away, then just clear the drain line using a turkey baster (as this
allows you to force hot water down the back wall opening, where the
elbow was), then dry all moisture out of the unit and you should be
    ready to go.

To find the drain you will have to remove the back panel of the freezer and you will find a trough with a drain hole in it.

The ice and water-dispensing system of your refrigerator is quite complex.
Many components work together to provide the ice and water. Aside from a simple problem of a leaky water tube or a jammed ice chute, most other components are not user serviceable.
I would suggest that you contact a qualified appliance repair technician for such repairs.

I have a whirlpool refrigerator model m#EB9FVBRWS05 and the water leaks from freezer, freezer not defrosting and frost buildup . How do I fix this problem?

There are three main components in a defrost circuit, the heater, the thermostat and the control device(either a timer or and ADC board). One of these are not working.

Sometimes the drain can clog with ice. If this is it - simple fix. Empty the freezer and find the drain. Put hot water in the drain with a turkey baster or try using a hair dryer to thaw the ice and let the water drain. A small amount of water drainage through this drain is normal. The water sits in a tray underneath and evaporates helped by heat from the compressor. If the drain plugs, the water will build up in the bottom of the freezer and become an ice block.

Gd5sha water under the freezer

This normally occurs when you have a large buildup of ice in the freezer, when it does a defrost there is just too much water for the hat on the compressor to handle. Make sure the door to the freezer & fridge is closing properly & the seal is in good condition & not falling off, moisture in the air causes frost in a freezer. So too many door openings can cause the same problem.

Water dripping from freezer into refrigerator

Just fixed my refrigerator last week that was doing the same thing. Water was dripping from the back top of the refrigerator and it was the drainage line in the freezer had frozen up and was plugged. Emptied the freezer and removed the bottom panel from the freezer and found large layer of ice. Turned freezer off and let everything melt. Then the hole in the back bottom of the freezer on the metal tray became visable. Contined to thaw until warm water would drain into the tray under the freezer. Was not hard at all and much better not cleaning up the water dripping all the time.

Ice maker stopped working

The water line may be clogged with debris. there is sometimes a filter in the water line to the fridge, or also a screen filter may be located at the point where the water line connects to the fridge. If they are clogged, your ice maker will not make ice and may even burn out.
Check that the water in the line is flowing freely. Also it might be a good idea to defrost the freezer in case you have a ice buildup in the freezer compartment. To do that, empty the freezer and blow air into the freezer for 30 minutes while the power if off. Note, keep the other side closed to protect the milk and other perishables.

Side by side, freezer very cold, frige warm

Any ice buildup is due to one of 2 problems. Either the defrost circuit is not working properlyor the drain hole where the defrosted water drains down to the underneath pan is clogged. I once found a spider's nest in the drain of a refrig that was in a seasonal house after the winter shutdown.

Very common is a defective (open) defrost thermostat, or a bad defrost timer. But for a unit only 5 yrs old I'd start with the drain hole. BE SURE YOU GET ALL THE ICE OUT. Use hot water, hairdryer etc, so water flows freely to drain pan

This is a common problem with old top mount refrigerators. The foam between the the two cavities starts to break down and sweat due to the differences in temperature between the two cavities. You can try emptying the unit, turning it off for a couple of days and leaving the doors open giving it a chance to dry out, if the condition returns after a short amount of time, then it is time for a new refrigerator, there is no cure for the breaking down of the Styrofoam inside the unit

Water dripping from freezer onto top shelf of fridge with ice buildup back of freezer

the defroster isn't close enough to the drain to be effective. remove the back wall of the inside of the freezer, remove the excess ice. clear out the ice from the drain using hot water and a turkey baster. there is a kit from whirlpool that uses a piece of metal and a screw around the defrost rod, but I found out that a piece of 14 gauge solid core wire with the insulation stripped off works great too. stick the stripped wire into the drain, 2 to 3 inches, and wrap the rest around the defrost rod.
