Question about GE Microwave Ovens

1 Answer

My microwave model #HVM1540DNIWW, manufactured 7/09 purchased 11/09Has stopped working. The only thing it does now is run the fan, with no way to turn it off except to un plug it. It would love it if I didn't have to replace my second GE MIcro. The first one broke after 5 years. and I was giving the product a second chance.

Whether the solution is correct or not, I don't think I should have to deal with the problem at all given the microwave is 6 months old. Thank you for your help and if I can't have GE deal with this odvious defect I'll take it up with the attorneys general. Thank you for your time and expertise

Hi, Where the oven is dead or mostly dead, the main fuse is the place to start. Locate and remove the main fuse. It will usually be a 1" x 1-1/4" ABC ceramic type directly in-line with the Hot (black wire) of the power cord. Test it with an ohmmeter - the reading should be zero ohms. If it is blown, suspect problems with the interlock switches, high voltage capacitor, or high voltage wiring. If it is good but the oven makes a loud humming sound when you attempt to cook, suspect the magnetron or high voltage diode, meaning on of them needs to be replaced

Thanks and take care

We have a 3 year old Cooke and Lewis integrated microwave/grill that has recently stopped working. It starts up but after 5/6 seconds it stops and 'err 5'comes up on the display. Any ideas?

if this was purchased from the likes of B&Q, at the time of purchase, the retailer must ensure that the goods are/were fit for purpose for a period of 6 years from date of purchase. This is regardless of manufactures warranty. Take it back, demand a new one, quoting the above

It just quit while cooking. Is there afuse in this microwave?

If the model number is correct, there is a 125V, 20 AMP line fuse inside the microwave. Its usually mounted at the point where the power cord enters the back of the unit. You will need to UNPLUG the microwave oven and remove the exterior case to access. The case comes off in various ways depending on manufacture and model. I found this illustration at pcappliancerepair.com based on the model number you listed this question under:

http://pcappliancerepair.com/model-display.php
The line fuse is listed as item 12.

You can usually purchase a box of fuses at a hardware store for just a little more than what the manufacturer charges for a single fuse. 125V, 20AMP Ceramic Slow Blow fuses are recommended.

If you have any questions, or need additional assistance troubleshooting, please post back and let me know. I hope you find this information helpful.

NOTE: Make sure you take any resistance readings with the microwave UNPLUGGED and the component under test isolated (removed) from the circuit.

Our Microwave keeps running and won't stop. It is

The fan you hear is probably the magnetron cooling fan and that, and the light, are probably both controlled by the electronics board that controls everything else. You might inquire online at Maytag or the Sears parts department to determine the cost of a replacement board but I suspect it will either not be available at all or cost 3/4 of a new microwave.

Goldstar model mv1526.Sometimes the fan comes on by itself and the only way to stop it is to unplug it for a few hours. The fan off on button does not stop it even though it reads fan stop.

Contact the manufacturer (Goldstar) about that--it sounds like your microwave definitely needs to be repaired, especially since you've already tried unplugging it (which is the first thing a technician would suggest that you try). Usually, the manufacturer can tell you how to get your microwave repaired or replaced, and if it's still under warranty, the repair/replacement may even be free!

Goldstar's phone number (according to their website, www.goldstarappliances.com ) is (800) 243-0000

Good luck! :)

JVM141G001 Spacesaver microwave; fan and heat not working

The average cost of a over the range microwave is around $550. You would have to call around or go visit an appliance store or a place like HOME DEPOT or LOWE'S to get a price quote on replacement parts. If it is cheaper, FIX IT. Good luck.

Active vent keeps opening and closing though fan is off.

When the unit begins the never ending opening and closing cycle, turn the vent fan on for a few seconds and then turn the fan off. This seems to stop the active vent from opening and closing. If this is GE quality, this is the last thing that I am going to purchase. GE refrigerators are garbage and now I am having problems with a new microwave oven.

Microwave exploded.

Did it make a popping noise, like a .22 cal pistol? Probably one of the larger capacitors on the power supply blew up.
