Gateway FPD 1730 (mfg June 2004) On start-up, monitor flashes bios screen for less than half a second, then flashes the Windows XP logo for less than half a second and then stays black, no image. No...

All support is finished for XP years ago. The system is 13 years old and well past it expected life. Average is 8 to 10 years on a shop bought unit like Gateway, 12 years on a custom build.

I am thinking you probably have a dry joint on the board behind the switch as holding the switch makes the monitor work.

My advice though is a new computer running Windows 10, technology moves on in hardware and software.

Ive just installed windows 7 on my pc and I wanted to know where to paste my old yahoo messenger conversations... I installed yahoo but I think its another version of it and I just cant find the Profile...

Your "Profiles" folder contains your complete message history archive on your computer. You can copy it to the same location on another computer if you want to view it there. We've included instructions for Windows XP and Windows Vista users.
To locate your complete message history archive on Windows XP:
  1. Open the "Run" command: press Windows Logo+R on your keyboard.
  2. Copy and paste the text below into the Run command ' then click OK:

    %ProgramFiles%\Yahoo!\Messenger\
To locate your complete message history archive on Windows Vista or Windows 7 (32-bit):
  1. Open the "Run" command: press Windows Logo+R on your keyboard.
  2. Copy and paste the text below into the Run command ' then click OK:

    %LocalAppData%\VirtualStore\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\
To locate your complete message history archive on Windows Vista or Windows 7 (64-bit):
  1. Open the "Run" command: press Windows Logo+R on your keyboard.
  2. Copy and paste the text below into the Run command ' then click OK:

    %LocalAppData%\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\Yahoo!\Messenger\
Warning: Copying your Profiles folder to another computer overwrites any existing message history archive on that computer and it is replaced by yours. That overwritten message history archive will be permanently eliminated by this process. (Workaround: Backup that message archive first to a storage medium such as a CD ROM.)

Dont have recovery disks and have virus...actually just missing disk 2

If the popup you're getting is from something like "MS Antispyware 2009" or similar, that's the same trouble I've seen on several other computers. Download a removal tool called ComboFix. You can find information on how to use it and links to download it here. This is a handy tool even if the virus you have is different as it will fix a number of virus and trojan problems. ComboFix can be run in safe mode if your computer can't start all the way into Windows. Turn your computer on, and when you see the Gateway logo screen press the F8 key. This will give you a startup menu screen from which you can pick starting in safe mode. This prevents Windows from loading everything except the minimum stuff it needs to start. Run ComboFix and let it repair the troubles it finds.

Gateway desktop 700xl computer stops at the logo screen and stops

I presume that your logo screen reads 'windows xp'. If so, there might be a problem with one of your startup drivers. Try to boot the computer in safe mode and uninstall any recently installed hardware or software and try to boot it up. It may be a virus also. So update your antivirus and run a complete scan. To boot in safe mode, hold F8 key when you're switching on your computer. you should see a screen which would give you the boot up options. Select "Safe mode with networking". This option lets you browse the internet from safe mode in case you need to.

Windows XP Will Not Start

You could try booting in safe mode and use system restore to roll back to when your pc last worked ok.

Please feed back if this resolves your problem.
