Sounds like you're using the "Spaces" function and inadvertently causing it to activate. Sometimes an extra keystroke will cause this...
Try accessing the shortcut control panel in the system preferences..It's in the keyboard/mouse control.
You can set the keyboard shortcut to default or scroll thru the list and check for typical wordprocessing keystrokes that may be controling Spaces... try disabling it.
