I'm not familiar with this particular unit--do you mean to say that the cooling system froze during the winter? If so, and the engine has overhead valves, the cylinder head, block, or both may have cracked causing water to leak into the cylinders which would have rusted the rings and cylinder walls (together). You are looking at major overhaul or even engine replacement (not what you were hoping). Good luck!

You have a set of points in the front of the generator part, next to where it connects to the motor. loosen that cover & slide it back and you will see them, take you a fine piece of sandpaper & smooth the carbon side of those brushes, just as you would in a starter. You can crank it up while you have that cover slid back & you should see little sparks from the brushes..this also will fix your 110 too

I have a Miller big 40 bout an 87 modle that runs and welds great but wont idle down. Any thoughts?

There is a solenoid that controls the idle speed and the run speed- it is stuck in run speed. It may be a binding linkage, it may be bypassed by a previous owner.Chances are, as the idle relay is controlled through a load sensor on the control board and it may simply be a wire is off, damaged, or the solenoid is stuck.

There were a few different engines available for that model so exact connection will vary,

This the main manual

The manual for the engine option you can scroll down to the "Big 40" in the list and just below that are the manuals for the different engines used.

I just started up a Miller Big 40 welder after 18 years, it runs like a charm, but the 110 plug is dead and there is no arc when trying to weld.

After 18 years, the welder has either lost its residual magnetism (which allows the output voltage to ramp up) or the voltage regulator is defective. Another possibility would be the brushes for the field not contacting the rings like they should - damaged brushes or weak springs. Contact Miller/ Hobart for a service manual, these checks are relatively easy to perform. The manual will give you specs that can be used for go or no go testing.

I have a Miller Big Blue 251D and while welding it died and won't restart.

Hi:
Have you check the fuses? Probably your machine experienced an overload. Check your owners manual on the troubleshoot section. Here's the link to the manual.
