Hello.

Go to the external drive manufacturer's website. Download and install the driver for your specific model and operating system.

Then, see if your computer sees the drive when you connect it.

If not, there could be a problem with the drive's USB cable or the drive itself.

Also, be certain that your computer's USB ports are OK.

Hope this helps.

How do I open the case and remove the hard drive?

Unplug the unit from electricity, wash & dry your hands, take steps to avoid you transmitting static electricity(look it up if you are not familiar). There are several sheet metal screws around the edge in the back of your CPU. Remove the ones that appear to join the outer lip to the inner lip all the way around. The front & back should now separate into 2 pieces. One the shell & the other the bulk of the system. The hard drive is usually located on a standard mounting shelf by itself with 1 or 2 small screws holding it in on the side with 2 wire connections in the back. The larger is a ribbon cable the is used for data & the other is the power cable. pull out the cables, unscrew the screws & the hard drive slides out. Some boxes may have something that blocks your access to screws, if so, temporarily remove them so you can work. If you are not sure of a potential problem...take a smart phone picture so you can see how it goes back together.

I slambed the lid shut, and somehow disabled the hard disk, can I plug it back in?

You think your hard disk is unplugged due to slamming a lid closed? If thats the case then the answer is yes. Get a screw driver and un screw both screws on the bottom of the laptop with the power cable unplugged and the battery out of the unit. Press and hold the power button down for sixty seconds before reseating the hard drive or connecting any cables to it.

it is very unlikely and kind of unusual that the hard drive would just become unplugged due to slamming a lid down. I hope you have not damaged the drive instead? If thats the case then there is nothing you can do but purchase another one.

Good luck!

Seagate 500GB FREEAGENT DESKTOP 7200RPM EXTERNAL USB 20 HARD DRIVE 16MB it just stoped working in the middle of the movie, complete blackout, tryed conect to another PC nothing came up, what it could be...

Try this:

1. Turn off the power supply to the hard drive.
2. Turn off your PC/laptop.
3. Connect the hard drive to the PC/laptop.
4. Turn on both devices.

It worked with mine.

You could also try installing Seagate Manager which can check for errors on the drive.

I have sony digital8 dcr trv 285e handycam but its picture package is not compatible for window 7 i want to watch my cassettes on my pc and convert them in to dvd also what is the solution

You will need a firewire cable tro connect to the PC and use Windows Movie Maker to capture the tapes to a hard drive, dedicated hard drive is best. Expoect about 13 gig of drive space per hour.
You then export you footage to a DVD Authoring program if you have one available.

My wife drop the laptop on the floor and since then when i start the laptop it says no boot device found.

Two possibilities here:
1. When your laptop was dropped, the connecting between the hard drive & the laptop's motherboard became loose, & as a result the motherboard could not properly detect the hard drive. Solution here is simple: Try removing the hard drive & replacing it back in the laptop & see if this resolves the problem.
2. If the case did not turn out to be as described in point (1), then most probably your hard drive is damaged as a result of the fall. In this case you will also need to remove it off the laptop, but you will have to buy & install a replacement hard drive, & re-install the operating system & all other software.

The document at the following link describes how to uninstall/install a hard drive in your laptop's model:

I have a video of a sailing ship entering harbour. The sound is not very good and I would like to change this to a suitable musical track.

If you have a PC with windows movie maker installed export your footage via USB2 into your video folder on PC then drag & drop or import your video into movie maker.Rip a CD music track in media player & drag & drop or import into movie maker.
turn down volume of original sound & replace with new soundtrack then publish the movie in format of your choice.
If you get stuck read movie makers help folder.

How to convert dv tape from Canon ZR20 to MY COMPUTER hard drive?

To transfer video off your minidv cassettes from your camcorder you would need to have a firewire connection to your PC. Either a 4 to 4 pin connection (laptop) or a 4 to 6 pin (desk top computer). USB is used only for picture still transfer. Here are the steps;

1. Plug your mini Dv camcorder into an outlet
2. Plug in you firewire connection into your computer, then plug the other end into your camcorder.
3. Turn on your camcorder and switch your camcorder to Play/VCR
4. Select the software that you want use to do the transfer. Windows Movie Maker is the most assessable software since you have XP on your computer
5. Name your file
6. Select capture from video device (automatically will allow you to save the entire tape and manually would allow you to capture parts of the tape).

Those are the basic steps in some detail. You can save your file from there or you can go on to edit.
