Question about Dell Computers & Internet

2 Answers

We have many PowerEdge 180AS KVM switches that have stopped working and are out of warranty. Most seem to be power issues. And others have bad video. Anyone seen this and have suggestions? Seems to be a common occurence after 2-3 years of use. Thanks

Thinking more along the lines of fixing them ourselves. Looks like the power supply board has one or two swollen capacitors.
Anyone repair any yourself, or know where to get parts for these?

We are using the same KVM model for our Dell servers and you are right, the lifespan of the KVM switch is more or less 2-3 years. I even have 1 that went bad (had a magenta display) a few days after the warranty and couldn't be fix. No available parts. And even if we can get the parts from other bad switches, we couldn't find schematic diagram.

It seems that PowerEdge 180AS has a life span of 2-3 years. I am a KVM tech before, and YES, most KVM switches started to show these kinds of problems, but not all.

Power problem, this is the common KVM problems (but for low-end KVMs only). The Power'Edge is a high-end KVM switch, and I think that they're using components that can easily becomes busted.

I would suggest to contact the manufacturer (though the KVM switches are out of the warranty period), and see if you can send the KVMs for repair. Unfortunately, you need to pay for the service.

Thank you and good luck!

How do i network it to my other tower

The easiest way is use a KVM switch. It is not networking, but they are handy just for that reason. They it allows you to use 1 keyboard, 1 monitor, and 1 mouse for 2 or more machines.

Look for something like this.

My base doesn't light up the power display and sound display at the bottom. The power button works; however, the volume buttons do not. I also have hooked the dock up to a 2 port USB KVM switch and it...

what OS, what operating system.
KVM are very unreliable. , we could talk KVM for days, on this.
no KVM evens stated, brand or model number.
dock ,circa 2008, compatible with V6000
what OS on v6000.
we can not guess what OS you are running, at all.

its a USB problem with the KVM.
V6000 is a 2006 product..
that came with XP or VISA, neither are supported now.
the V6000 must have all its HP drivers installed to work right.
no KVM is guaranteed to work here, with XP its real bad.
XP has bad USB drivers, that are infamous for not working
with odd USB devices, nor many other things,
got SP3 for XP, IF XP>? it fixes some of that be never all.

this is a V6000 to KVM USB issue.
and no OS stated at all.

you need an RMA, I would call Avocent's tech support and request an RMA. Eventhough that your unit might be out of warranty, they issue Out of Warranty RMAs against a fee.

I hope that helps.

This worked great for a couple of months and now

It may be possible that the KVM has gone bad. Make sure the keyboard is plugged into the keyboard port of the KVM as this is the only port on the KVM that will recognize the hot key commands. If you have ensured the keyboard is plugged into the keyboard port and you have tried multiple keyboard and still experience problems I would assume the KVM is having problems. IOGear KVMs have a three year warranty and their support can be reached by email

Kvm switch won't stay on second computer, switches back

You might try disabling any power saving schemes in use on either computer. The KVM (I believe) gets its power through the ports and one computer may be shutting down power.
