Its sounds like you have the real FUNK (the good stuff) music...

John, if you still have the casing for these little cassettes I will tell you how to roll these tapes back onto the hub. you will need some crazy glue and a tiny phillip screw driver...its operation time, unscrew the 1st tape that is off the hub..when you open it make sure that tiny metal w/cotton pad is intack now the tape is already off the hub right (take the hub and push side ways that small piece on wheel like...now straighten out the tape on the other side of you...put 1/4 or 1/8 of in onto the hub ..do not try to snap the tiny piece back in, slide it in sideway on top tape..once this done ...no tape is sticking out right...place the tape through its slots (so it can run smooth) we about to put it back together make sure the metal w/ cotton pad is still in its place.... screw it back together (crazy glue is only for the tapes casing that dont have screws or that cracked)....now continue the process for the rest,,,,yes I have done the same process for micro / regular cassettes/ VHS and the those 8's. like me I still have my tapes too but a suggestion its a little time consuming but you should either put these tapes on portable hard drive (500 gig) or burn it to CD...

hope this helpful

How do I record myself singing

Much depends on the sort of quality you need and the duration of the performance.

Smartphones, tablets, digital memo recorders and suchlike are capable of recording but due to the size the quality isn't great and in some cases the duration they are capable of would be limited.

Whatever system you choose will provide a problem because recording the choir will be relatively easy but recording you singing with the choir will be more difficult. A microphone would need to be carefully placed on a stand close to you perhaps or you would need to hold it or you could stand apart from the choir.
The logistics will be for you to sort out with the choirmaster and the other members...

The device is another matter. The simplest would be a quality cassette type tape recorder. These have been obsolete for years but there is still quite a few around. Even better would be an old reel-to-reel tape recorder but those are now few and far between. The advantage of these are they just need loading with tape and switching on...

Some video cameras have amazing stereo sound and in particular the VHS video camera/recorder. Other cameras have sound capability and sometimes it is very good so they are another option....

Perhaps the best option for these modern times would be a half-decent laptop computer loaded with recording software. There are many programmes available and some are free and some will turn the laptop into a virtual recording studio. Goldwave is free, and very stable and reliable but it can be tricky to make it work. Add a compatible microphone and you are all set. The better the quality of microphone the better the results will be.

Happy singing!

HP1020 fax answer phone etc

Digital answer phones record the message on a memory chipset in the same way old tape machines did using a magnetic support. Quality can only be improved by the technology itself, problem is with your specific machine.
If you have a broadband filter try replacing it.
Test the machine on a different phone socket and see if it makes any difference.
Check on your answering machine settings, you should find an option to control volume.

Recording

I'm going to venture a guess that what might have happened is you changed the mode of recording. VCRs record in either short play, or long play, or even super long play. As the length of playtime goes up, the quality goes down, because for short play, a 6 hr tape will record only two, whereas a 12 hour tape will record four hours. More information is stored on the tape, so the quality of picture and sound increase, but a longer movie could be cut off. You can adjust the play-length with the sp/slp buttons on your remote control.

The tape might be getting old, replace it and see what happens.  If it is still acting up, It might be he is not recording properly or the recorder is bad.  Try talking directly into the mic and see if it is better.  If it is, he needs to talk louder or needs to hold it close.

Problem is dirty / clogged video head of v-8 player or camcorder what ever you are using for playback. Use good quality video head cleaning cassette for head cleaning.
Please check tapes on another camcorder as tapes seems OK.

VCR tape playback not good

Check your "tracking" If the tape played fine in the old machine, then tracking is the answer, provided that the new machine records good.

Playback *stops* on tapes where I used Aux input to record

It could be that.. you generally want a timebase corrector to properly record from analog tape to some other medium. But maybe not. Most tape-based devices also include a tension sensor, to detect the end-of-tape. If you're using tapes that are too old, cheap, etc. it could be that you're seeing this triggered.

I recommend trying the same VHS recording with a good quality, fresh tape. If it's still kicking off, you at least know it's due to the camcorder having issues with sync or something on the tape. If it works, blame the old tapes.

It's probably camcorder dependent, but I have done tape restorations using Digital8 and DV equipment, and have never known a camcorder to cut itself off due to dropouts or other problems on the tape -- mine just play through. So I think it's at least possible that it's just the tape.
