Question about Smith 2hp Pool Pump Motor A O Electric Pool Motor Replacement for 48y Square Flange Usq1202

Wiring of 2hp motor

The reconditioned spa pump motor is a 230 volt single phase motor & has 3 wires 1- yellow 1-white 1-black wire haging out of the motor enclosure & when connecting the yellow & black to 1- hot conductor & 1- hot conductor to the white wire the motor will not start it will just hum until the thermal overload kicks the motor circuit off.Is it possible the capacitor is bad or could it be miswired when it was reconditioned?

You need to take advice from the motor manufacturer or reconditioner to ensure you are wiring it correctly.

Typically a basic single phase motor will have a start winding and a run winding. That usually makes four wires for a reversible motor but that can be cut to three if the motor must run in one direction only so the three wires would be start, run and common.

The run is connected to the hot side of the supply and the start similarly connected to the hot side except the start capacitor will be in series. The common wire will require connecting to a neutral and of course the motor body will need a ground unless it is double insulated.

It should be possible to sort which is which using a sensitive ohmmeter.

In this case you are going to be better off consulting a electrician to help you with this issue. There are to many risk involved in getting someone to assist you over the internet with this. If someone tells you the wrong wire placement and you get hurt or pop the fuse in your house you are now looking at that much more work,

SOURCE: Pool pump 3/4 hp wiring

I think the lug with no screw is for 110 volt? Don't know, but your 2 wires in, black and red are both hot, each one to the lugs, line 1 and 2, the bare wire gets bolted on outside of the motor and jumped to another ground somewhere, and the white wire, goes to a lug marked B?,,, check that one. I went to the web site and they want you to know if you do it wrong, no guarantee, so check out the frame number, then look up your motor and go by the label.

How do i wire a 2hp 1ph. motor that is 115/230 volt to run on 230 volt?

Did you check under the connection plate for a wiring diagram? If it is single phase it will only have three wires to it, but 4 connections. There will be a common ground wire, a common neutral wire and then with the live wire you have the choice of putting it on the 110 connector or the 230 connector.

Wire 230 volt air compressor wiring diagrams

On 230 volts you have 3 wires 2 are 115 volt and the third wire is ground. As long as you hook the ground wires together correctly the other wires don't matter. Usually the ground wire is either white or green. The black wires are hot (115 volts).

My pool originally had a 2 speed AO Smith pump motor. Several years back it was replaced with an AO Smith single speed motor. I am replacing that motor with a new AO Smith single speed Centurion Switchless...

Is it going to run on 230V then? If so you would normally use red and black. The white wire should be a neutral and the ground wire is obviously ground.

Do you have a meter you can use to confirm the voltage between the wires? If you do you'll want to start with red and white since you seem to think black was not being used before. If the voltage reads 230 and the motor is set up for 230 then attach one wire to L1 and the other to L2...it will not matter which is connected where as long as one is on each terminal. Insulate the black and ground the ground lead to the motor ground screw.

If the voltage is not 230 between those two check between red and black. If that is the 230 then insulate white and put red and black to L1 and L2.

Wiring a new pump but the wires are different colors

Neutral should be white. To be sure pull the cover plate off the *********** of the motor on the back side of the plate it will have the wires color coded for which wire is neutral and which is hot. Normally Black would be hot and the yellow wire could be second speed so if you look on the plate on the new motor you will be able to see the wiring diagram. This is assumeing it is a 110 Volt motor single phase.
