Question about Dirt Devil Featherlight Bagless Upright Vacuum

Brush bar can't spin

Dirt Devil Featherlight Bagless Upright: Brush bar will not spin; I can't even force it to turn an inch with my hands. It's as if it's seized somewhere inside. Just replaced the belt a couple weeks ago. There is a horrid smell if I turn it on; obviously like a burnt motor. Can I fix this??

Hi There,

Actually I just answered a question almost identical to yours! The belt on his model continiously snapped also.

I walked him through how to check the problem, and he was able to get his vacuum fixed. It really sounds to me like your brush roller has gone bad as well.

How to Replace the belt & Roller brush on a Dirt Devil Featherlite:

Also here, another link to the exact roller brush that your model take on our website if you haven't already purchased one.

I hope this helped your your vacuum!

Hi There, no you'll just need to replace the beater bar itself, that's it. If you purchase the roller brush on the link I left you in the solution above, this should fix your problem. In the future, you can remove the beater bar, and the bearing caps on the end of it and clean the end caps out to prevent them from melting.

Dirt Devil Featherlite - how to remove the beater bar to clean

If you lay it down and look under the base- by the brush roll- there are three screws you have to remove w/ a philips head screwdriver to get the base plate off. From there you can take out the brush roll, etc.

Are you talking about the beater bar? If so, you probably have a broken belt

look on the underside where the brush roller is and unplug it first then try to turn the brush roller by hand,if it turns real freely the belt is broke.you might have a clog at your intake hose at the bottom its the clear looking hose that goes from the bottom and comes up the back.if the belt is broke before you put a new one on clean the motor shaft there might be some old belt rubber on it ,otherwise the new belt won't last

Check further down, by the brush roll, the inlet may be clogged, or something like a nail or pin wedged sideways in the hose, and catches debris and clogs up. This has a one year warranty, if you still can't firgure it out, take it to a warranty shop and take proof of purchase with you.

Check the brush roll, are the bristles worn down? Check the belt also, if it is stretched, then it won't drive the brush roll like it should.
