The first thing you want to do is make sure that the drive is not being detected on other usb ports on your computer and if not then you want to try it on someone elses computer to make sure the problem is in the drive.

I will assume that the drive isn't being detected on anything. On usb drives there is a usb interface and a normal hard drive inside the case. Unless you have dropped it a few times the problem will be in the usb section. There really is nothing you can fix in the usb section. The good part is that the hard drive and your data is most likely just fine.

Luckily you can get usb drive enclosures for as cheap as $15 (and up). This means it is worth taking your drive out and putting it in the new enclosure. You may need to buy a cable adapter which just lets the real small hard drives be able to plug onto the normal sized ones thats about $5. The problem with doing this is that most usb enclosures use an external power plug and are not powered off of the usb port.
This will enable you to get your data off and reuse the drive but it may not be as convienient as it was due to the power adapter.

If you are comfortable with doing simple computer repairs then this is about the same as putting in a new hard drive. If not then any computer store should be able to do it for you for a reasonable fee as it is just labor.

This won't fix your drive but it will give you your data back which is the important part.

WD external HDD my passport 500 Gb . It's not correctly installed into my PC - PC can't find driver. System Windows XP

Maybe it's a power issue. Try a shorter usb cord or try a different usb port. If you are using an usb hub, try to connect the hard disk straight to the pc.

Connect it to a different computer. If it still is not detected, then there is a hardware problem. Exercise the warranty to get it repaired/replaced.
Note that W.D. has a "Customer Loyalty" program; buy a new disk-drive from the W.D. web-site, at a good discount. Or, search online for a professional "data recovery service". They will repair your disk-drive just long-enough to copy your files to a brand-new disk-drive.

My Western Digital Passport 80GB Hard Drive is no longer detected when I plug it in. The power light is on, the drive is running but it is not detected on either of my computers running Windows...

Any external disk-drive as small as 80GB is probably "out-of-warranty" -- it's likely that the disk-drive inside the enclosure has "died".

You have two options, not mutually exclusive:
* exercise the Western Digital "Customer Loyalty" program -- find the serial-number of your Passport, and access WD's web-site to buy a new Passport, citing the old serial-number to qualify for a significant discount on your purchase;
* open the enclosure, disconnect the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, buy a new, compatible, disk-drive, and connect it to the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, to "frankenstein" it, creating a "new" external storage-device.

My computer is not recognizing my Western Digital passport elite what do I do?

Have to check it in the Device Manager that the new device have been detected or not. It may happen that when the external HDD connects to the computer for the first time computer cannot detect it as it is not properly formatted in proper file-system. Open Computer Management and click on Disk Management and format the device correctly to operate.

I have new wd external hdd 250 gb, its not detecting on my desktop.

Is the drive formatted? Did you get an install disk supplied with it? If so try running it.
Check your system BIOS and see if the drive is being detected there. Also you can check the Device Manager in Windows to see if there any issues with the drive.

My WD 250GB passport portable hard drive is not recognized

If your system detects the connected device that is a good start. Was the drive formatted for another operating system? Certainly try the drive on another system and/or another drive on your system.
