Question about Washing Machines

1 Answer

Maytag Neptune Washer model MAH3000AWW. Push button to wash and it stays on for approx 10 seconds and shuts off. Prior to this it would go through the wash cycle but would not spin.

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly. This is what the service manual says for it runs for 5 seconds and shuts off:

Runs For Five Seconds Then Shuts OFF:
Suspect a communication problem between
motor, the motor control board and the machine
control board. Check the motor and
motor control system by removing the JP4
connector on the motor control board. Set
the timer dial into the delay cycle and then
press the push to start switch. If the motor
operates and the washer goes into a 50 rpm
tumble, then the source of the problem is the
RD 30 wire leading from the motor control to
the P4(2)/RD30 connector on the machine
control board. When the machine control
tells the motor control to run the motor, it
monitors the red wire to determine if the motor
is actually running. If the board does not
see a return signal, the washer will shut down.
If RD30 wire is making contact, then suspect
possible problems with timer input circuits.
(See the following section on Machine Operation
Does Not Match Cycle Description):

As far as this statement about your initial symptom:

Prior to this it would go through the wash cycle but would not spin.

This seems to lead to a door switch interlock problem and ties into the runs for a few seconds and shuts off symptom.

Are you seeing a "door locked" light on the control panel? If not then the door switch is most likely bad.

Thanks for using FixYa.

Thank you for your quick solution. Looking for the easy possible solution before I give up. The motor control board sounds like it is not a project for me and proably more expensive then what I want to pay to be repaired.

The second part of your solution sounds like an easy way to check and fix. If it is the door lock, how do I locate this and what do I look for to check it out?

One of the symptoms of a bad door interlock is here:

When input is present, this is indication the

washer door is locked. The machine controller

will not command the spinner to spin faster

than 50 rpm when the input is not present

    prior to spin.

If this is what you experienced when it would not spin before the door interlock has a problem.

More info on what the machine will do if the door interlock is a problem:

Washers between Series 10 and 16

The machine control will allow the washer

to restart only if the user sets the timer

into a Rinse Tumble or Spin3 increment.

Washers from Series 17 and Later

The machine control will allow the washer

to restart in any setting. After that cycle

completes, the user must open the door

before the machine control will allow a

    third cycle to start.

Wax Motor Check - Door Lock

    M e c h a n i s m

Check the wax motor for proper resistance.

This check should be made with the electrical

    supply disconnected from the washer.

the wire harness from the wax motor

terminals and place the ohm meter probes on

the terminals of the wax motor. The wax motor

should have a resistance of approximately

    1900 ohms at room temperature.

(The connectors J4 / P4 on the motor control board is the large connector on the right side of the motor control board in the middle of the RH side of the card.)

    5. Remove JP4 Interface connector wire harness

on front end of motor control board.

    6. Plug the washer power cord into a 120 VAC

power source. The motor control will immediately

execute a test routine and the

motor should run, rotating the spinner at

    50 rpm.

If the motor runs, and the spinner rotates

at the proper RPM speed, the problem lies

outside of the motor and motor control

circuit. Disconnect power to the washer

and reconnect the JP4 Interface connector

    to the motor control.

This pretty much tells you if the motor control board is the problem or the problem is somewhere else.

Don't forget to reconnect the harness to the control board.

    Thanks for using FixYa.

Sorry I missed your question about the door lock.

Download this srvc manual ( <-click then save as) and look up door lock wax motor for location.

Neptune MAH3000AWW won't shut off automatically

Sound like there is a fault in the control panel. Check the manufacturers website and see if there is a recall on this model. If, not, then take the panel off, and check the selector switch which controls the cycles. See if there is a catch that is not engaging, or not making contact. If this is a digital, board, then you might have to replace the whole entire control panel. Check the instruction booklet on how to order this part. Install should be very easy, just remove a few screws, and swap the parts out.

Washer doesn't stay running. filled with water, then shut down then filled some more and now stuck doing nothing. If push start button if runs for about 5 seconds then shuts off. 10 years old.

For being 10 years old...I'd say R.I.P Neptune. A 10-year-old dryer is going to cost you more in repairs than the cost of a new machine! And even if it is cheap enough to fix, the parts may be no longer available. I used to work at the Harrisburg PA Sears Parts/Service me...I know.

motor controller or motor, weigh the cost of the repair before comitting to the repair, new parts only carry a 90 day warranty
this could be a large amount applied to the cost of a new machine

re original issue, see if R11 is burned. if so, need to change R11 resistor and associated triac, and probably wax motor so it won't do it again. temporary fix just cut out R11, door won't lock. if your model won't spin that way, depress actuator for microswitch from door wax motor. instructions on web.

either a faulty pressure switch / pot or faulty controller - either way you will need to call someone in.
