Question about Kirby Ultimate G Bagged Upright Vacuum

1 Answer

Having trouble with electrical cord.

Vacuum will not turn on, no power and the cord seems to be ok i think the connection in side the unit must of come loose. Is there a way to get inside the unit, theres a screw that holds the cable to the housing.

Greetings from GoVacuum.com,

I'll tell you that 9 times out of 10, when a Kirby Generation doesn't turn on, it's the cord that needs to be replaced. This is by far the most common problem that we see on Kirby repairs.
The Kirby motor is very well built, and usually has a life of 30+ years (G3 is about 12-15 years now). The only other problem it could be on the Kirby would be carbon brushes, or the switch assembly.

I would first try testing the power cord, I think this will solve the problem for you. To test a cord on a Kirby Generation (all Generation models are the same machines, just different colors) first follow where the cord goes into the Kirby at the bottom. To access this cover easier, first remove the "boot" at the bottom of the outer bag. This is the plastic part at the bottom of the outer bag that connects onto the Kirby. You will see that there is a plastic cover over the cord. You will need to remove the screw that holds this cover on.

Now after you have removed the cover, pull the plug out of the machine. Once you have the cord disconnected from the machine, you can now test it to see if there is a short somewhere in the cord. You will need to purchase an inexpensive continuity tester from Home Depot, Radio Shack or most other Having trouble with electrical cord. - 2_bing.gif stores2_bing.gif. This will tell you if there is power running through the cord, or if the cord is bad. With the continuity tester, plug the cord into the wall outlet, then put the positive, and negative testing rods into the female end of the cord that plugs into the machine. You will then be able to tell if the cord has continuity going through it. The teHaving trouble with electrical cord. - ececc51.jpgndicate if there's continuity or not.

The picture here shows that the cord is good. If your tester does not light up, or indicate that there is continuity, you'll simply just need to purchase a new cord. As I stated earlier, this is the most common reason that a Kirby won't turn on.

If however your cord tests OK, this indicates that the machine either needs a new motor (or carbon brushes in the motor) or it needs a new switch.

Machine no power seems very hot

Vacuum cleaners easily overheat and will shut off as a result. The cause may be a bad electric connection, electric cord or accumulation of hair on the roller bar (prevents the bar from spinning, which burns up the motor). It might be a temporary problem or the motor might have burned up. Let it cool down, check all cords and connections carefully and retry it. Kenmore Progressive Vacuum electrical issue. My

It could be the wires or switch in the hose and/or the connection between the hose and the vacuum. It could be the power cord or a loose or bad wire inside the canister. It could be the carbon brushes in the motor are worn out. To find a short or electrical problem you need to know how to trace the power flow from the plug and cord all the way to the motor. You can test the wiring in the hose with an electrical tester to see if there is a problem with it before you purchase a new one.

My Miele Carina Vacuum stopped working. Does it have a fuse that can be replaced that could be at fault here?

although it might have an internal fuse on this model, I dont think that will be the problem.

The miele cord rewinder has been known to have a small fault in it where the cord winder that actually retracts the cord onto will come apart from the electrical connection in the cord winder itself.

As most of these units have a 5 year warranty anyway, I suggest that you take it to your nearest miele dealer for a repair/replacement on the cord rewinder.

Good luck.

Kenmore Powermate power head not working

I've got the same problem. Try checking out the electrical connection where the hose attaches to the canister. The hot male terminal is corroded and the female socket is burned out. Its an unfortunate design flaw that every time you open the vacuum to replace the bag the electrical connection disconnects and reconnects. Not sure if I can find replacement parts for a 10 year old vacuum or if a home-made re-wiring job is in order. Will find out tomorrow.

Kirby Diamond Edition (no power)

You just check the bag "boot" to see if there is something worn down enough to keep the vacuum from turning it back on. If it is worn, buy a new mini-emptor assembly and install it and your vacuum should work fine.

Kirby Generation 3 no power...

I don't believe there are any service manuals online, as Kirby has service centers around the country. There are 3 things in the power string--on/off foot switch, the power cord, and the power assembly that the cord plugs into underneath the bag in the main part of the body. One of the problems the G3 had was where the cord plugged into the body--the assembly was a very thin plastic piece supporting the 2-prong electrical connection. This plastic piece was known for breaking, and was actually recalled back in the 90's. You can take the cord connection off and look to see if that piece is broken, then you'll have to take it in, or buy a "switch" as it's called on ebay or somewhere and replace.

it sounds like the spring on the cord reel let go. difficult to reinstall. it may have been broken already and that is why it came off. it is rather meticulous trying to work on a cord reel. many can't be disassembled without breaking

Electrical

PROBLEM: THE KIRBY WILL NOT TURN ON AT ALL
POSSIBLE CAUSES:

Please note......The Kirby has TWO safety switches that need to be engaged before it will operate. One is on the fan case in the front. It is activated by having an attachment attached to the front. (hose, power nozzle, etc.) The other switch is on the side of the Kirby where the cloth bag attaches and is engaged by the little tab that sticks out from the side of the hard plastic cloth bag "boot". The bag boot MUST be completely engaged to activate the safety switch and allow the Kirby to power on. If you are having trouble getting the bag to properly engage, (sometimes they are STUBBORN) simply lubricate the black gasket that the boot fits onto with gasket lubricator, VASELINE, or try a tiny drop of DISHWASHING DETERGENT or HAND CREAM. It doesn't take much, so use the smallest amount possible to get the desired effect. You should hear a slight "pop" when the bag completely engages.
If neither of these things are indicated, it is probably again, either the power cord, switch or the carbon brushes.

If your Kirby is sparking there are a few causes...

PROBABLE CAUSE (MOTOR): Worn out carbon brushes, bad armature or perhaps BOTH
PROBABLE CAUSE (CORD): The cord has a short in it. Replace the power cord
PROBABLE CAUSE (POWER NOZZLE): There is something metallic stuck in the fan or power nozzle

I think you have a problem with the carbon brushes and amature because of where you describe seeing the sparks. I would suggest taking it to an authorized dealer for repair if it is the motor that is going bad.

Replacing a fraayed and twisted power cord on a Hoover windtunnel upright

ok so I took this vaccum apart completely except for the electrical and motor systems. It seems to me that without dismantling both of these systems on the vaccum you can't replace the power cord. And I wouldn't recommend taking them apart unless you know what you are doing since replacing the power cord seems to require cutting the old power cord and soldering the new one onto the old terminals. All in all its probably easier to get a new vaccum altogether.
