Question about Intermatic & Indoor/Outdoor Rain Tight Timer

I am replacing the motor (#WG1573-108) for my Intermatic timer WH40. Do both white wires from the motor attach to the load poles, screws # 2 and 4 on the timer? I forgot where the original were wired to. Thanks!

No, for the Intermatic WH40 the clock motor is connected to the LINE terminals (Terminals #1 and #3) . Which wire connects to where doesn't matter as long as you get one under the #1 terminal and the other one under the #3 terminal. While the WG1573 is the correct part# when using 240 volts, double check the clock motor voltage to make sure says it's for 208-277 volts.

My WH40 makes a loud hum, but it works well. It is about 20 years old, and didn't make this noise until fairly recently. Could the motor be requiring replacing?


1) Yes, the noise is from clock motor turning the gears.
When timer is new, parts have a bit of white grease on them.
Turn off power and spray WD 40 or apply some white grease and see if that helps.

Tip out mechanism using thumb spring located top inside box and check clock motor number.

EI210 replaces single-pole switch only.
Single pole switch is where 1 switch controls the Load (light, fan, motor)

To wire this timer:
1) Single-pole switch has 2 insulated wires and 1 bare ground wire.
2) Connect insulated switch wires to timer red wire and timer black wire, in either order for now.
3) Connect timer green wire to bare ground wire.
4) In back of electric box are white wire that are twisted together and covered with wire nut. Connect timer white wire to these wires. This will power electronics located inside the timer.
5) If electric box does not have white wires described above, then connect timer white wire to bare ground wire along with green wire.
6) Turn power ON. Press oval button. If indicator light turns ON, then timer is wired correctly. If indicator light does not come on, then reverse timer black wire and timer red wire.

How to wire a intermatic timer T104 240 v to a 120v?


T104 is 240volt timer.
Timer has terminals A 1 2 3 4
T-104 clock motor must receive 240Volts to operate.
Clock motor wires are white-colored and can be seen connected to terminals 1 and 3.

There are two work-arounds for using T104 for 120V.

1) Diagram 1 showing how to change wiring:

Move 240V clock motor wires to terminal 1 and A.
Connect 240V Hot leads to terminals 1 and A. This will power the 240V clock motor
Hot wire going to 120V load connects to terminal 2. This wire will be turned on each time timer turns on, and 120Volts will power the 120V load.
To complete 120V circuit, neutral wire that comes from neutral busbar in breaker box connects to 120V load.

To control additional 120Volt circuit, run jumper wire from terminal 1 to terminal 3.
Connect Hot to second load to terminal 4.

2) Second method is to change T104 timer into T103 timer:

WH40 is 240Volt timer.
WH40 will not work with 120V circuit.

There are two hot wires in 240V circuit because every circuit requires two wires to complete the circuit.
Hot wires from breaker connect to terminal 1 and 3.
Notice that small white wires are also connected to terminals 1 and 3.
Small white wires power clock motor located on back of mechanism, so this says power from breaker box must arrive on terminals 1 and 3. This insures that clock motor runs continuously.
If clock motor only runs when manual override switch is clicked ON, then your Hot and Load wires are reversed.

Bare ground wire connects to green ground screw.
Wires going to Load (water heater) connect to terminals 2 and 4.

FYI: Terminal A is not used unless circuit also has a Neutral wire,

I have an intermatic WH40 timer that works great when it is "On". However, once the unit encounters the "Off tripper", it turns the hot water power off, but the timer dial no longer...


If this is new installation, you have Load wires and Breaker wires reversed.

Hot wires from breaker connect to terminals 1 and 3 ... notice also there are small white wires connected to terminals 1 and 3.
Small white wires go to 240Volt clock motor located on back of mechanism, so these terminals have to be Hot all the time so clock motor is ON all the time >> thus hot wires from breaker connect to same terminals that have small white wires.

Load wires to water heater connect to terminals 2 and 4

Reverse your wires and things should work fine.

Timer will not turn water heater ON at set time, has to be done manually. However, it will turn water heater OFF at set time.


If this is new installation, check wiring. Hot and Load wires might be reversed.
Check that ON OFF trippers are both attached to yellow dial.

If timer worked fine before, and started missing recently, then tripper pins probably worn out.
Trippers contact mechanical lever, and push lever on-and-off.
Trippers are softer metal and designed to wear out before lever.
If lever is worn out, timer needs to be replaced, but try new trippers first.

How WH40 timer works:
Clock motor rotates dial.
ON-OFF trippers on dial contact lever.
ON tripper pushes lever one direction.
OFF tripper pushes lever other direction.
Lever moves electrical contacts together, or pulls contacts apart.
When lever moves on-and-off, manual override lever also snaps back and forth with audible clicking sound.

Using q-tip, add touch of white grease to lever where trippers contact.

Why do I need to use the Jumper? Does the timer close the circut on the nutrel side only or does is close both ?


EH10 has four screw terminals: 1 2 3 4
EH10 has two screw terminals exclusively for electronic clock motor.
These terminals connect exclusively to clock ... there is no internal jumper that passes power to another terminal.

Terminals 2 and 3) Black Hot lead connects to two terminals. Hot connects to terminal 2 and to terminal 3 ... so you put a jumper wire between terminals 2 and 3.

Terminal 1) All neutral or white wires connect to terminal 1, so there are two white wires on terminal 1.

Terminal 4
) Black wire going to 120V Load connects to terminal 4.

Contrast EH10-electronic-timer with T-101-electro-mechanical-timer. T-104 clock motor has two separate wires that connect to terminals A and 1. Electronic clock doesn't have those separate wires.

Your second question about closing the circuit.
When timer turns ON, it closes circuit between terminals 3 and 4.
So the Hot is closed.
Neutral is not closed, it is open at all times.
EH10 is SPST timer ... One single pole is opened-and-closed (SP), and timer completes action with a single throw (ST)

I having troble with my t103 timer to turn the lights on manualy i try to set the timer but for some reason doesn't work what can i do ???


T103 Intermatic timer has 120Volt clock motor and can control 120V or 240V Loads.

Troubleshoot T103:
1) Manual override is working correctly, and it snaps crisp and clean, and Load turns on-and-off.
That means timer is basically good.

2) Next look to see if yellow dial is rotating.
If dial is not rotating, then 120Volt clock motor needs to be replaced.
Take photo of wiring and mark wires before starting.
Remove two white wires connected to screw terminals 1 and A.
Snap timer mechanism out of box, clock motor is on back of timer.
Use small star screwdriver to remove old clock motor.
Reattach white wires on terminals 1 and A, tighten screws very tight.
Reset current time: lift and rotate dial until current time lines up with silver pointer.

3) If dial is rotating, but gets stuck at certain times, or runs slow, then replace clock motor.

4) If dial is rotating, and trippers are attached to dial, but timer does not turn ON, then trippers are worn down and need to be replaced.

5) How Intermatic mechanical timers work:
Dial with ON-OFF trippers is rotated by clock motor.
Trippers on dial contact ON-OFF lever.
ON tripper pushes lever one direction.
OFF tripper pushes lever opposite direction.
Lever moves electrical contacts on back of timer that turn Load ON-OFF.
Manual override lever clicks back and forth with each ON-OFF action.

I am replacting my T104 timer with a GE 15601. The posts on the T104 are marked 1 2 3 4. However on the 15601 they are marked L 1 X 2. How do these map to each other?


GE 15601 is a replacement module for Intermatic timers.
Intermatic timers can snap inside the old box without needing to replace the box, and GE has made a product that taps into that market.

But the GE manual is missing key facts like clock voltage and wiring.

The following information is correct ONLY if the GE timer is rated for 240Volts Why? The T-104 is a 240V timer. I have 10 different Intermatic timers on my office shelves right now, and wrote the T-104 page linked to above.

Below is picture of the back of GE timer taken from GE manual.

Please look at the image as a reverse image of your wiring poles.
T104 has poles A 1 2 3 4
Black wire on Intermatic Pole 1 is the Hot from Breaker
Black wire on Intermatic Pole 2 is the Black to Load
White wires on Intermatic Poles 3 and 4 are the White from breaker and White to Load. So on the GE timer, 2 white wires are on same pole.

On the GE timer, there is a brass connector between 2 of the Poles that connects those poles electrically, so no wire goes on one of the GE Poles

That's the wiring changeover.

NC screw is 2nd from left
COM is 2nd from right

A) How to wire t1905 for 125V
You will have four wires >> a Black and White from breaker box; and a Black and White to load

1) Black hot wire from breaker connects to COM
2) White neutral wire from breaker box connects to Clock
3) White neutral wire to load connects to Clock
4) Black wire to load connects to NO -or- NC screw [one of these screws will have no wire attached]
NO turns 'off' with times set on timer
NC screw turns 'on' with times set on timer
If you want your load to turn 'on' when timer clicks 'on' then connect Black wire to NC screw

B) How to wire t1905 for 240V
You will have four wires >> 2 hot wires from breaker box; and 2 hot wires to load. These wires might be Black and White or Black and Red



1) Black hot wire from breaker connects to COM
2) Red or White hot wire from breaker box connects to Clock
3) Red or White hot wire to load connects to Clock

4) Black hot wire to load connects to NO -or- NC screw [one of these screws will have no wire attached]

NO turns 'off' with times set on timer
NC screw turns 'on' with times set on timer
If you want your load to turn 'on' when timer clicks 'on' then connect black wire to NC screw
