Question about Televison & Video

5 Answers

I have a TV with a DVD player combo, #NS-13CTV. On my local channels I get a black box right in the middle of the screen. On the other cable channels it does not appear. I can't get it off. This annoys me greatly. What can I do? You can email me at roseydeb@msn.com with any help you can give me. I am sending you this at work so please respond to my personal email. Thank you for your time in this matter. Debbie Hagosky roseydeb@msn.com

Sorry - unable to reply via email, only on forum, and solution must be rated to be closed.
Is this a problem on other "lower" (1-49) channels? You dont include if your using a cable converter box but assuming not its likely due to your TV settings being incorrectly set. The antenna settings are probably set to "AIR" and not "Cable". If using converter it is probably a problem with your converter. Either way if you cant find an issue call the Cable provider and they should be able to come out and look at it. They should be able to diagnose if its Cable or TV easily (and for free).

It almost sounds like the Closed Caption setting is turned on.
If you have your Closed caption turned on and the station is not sending a C.C. signal, you will get a Square black box.
See if there is a Closed Caption or Text option on the remote control and see if you can turn it to OFF.

Hope this helps.
Good luck.

Hi,

Initially, I would suspect PIP (Picture in Picture) but that normally is only available in bigger screen sizes. It is also possible for other (OSD) On Screen Display messages or notifications.

Can you please confirm if it is an Insignia brand?

Please post back.

Good luck and kind regards. Thank you for using FixYa.

    I will assume that it is an Insignia.

    A few things you can try:
    set C. Caption to OFF;
    set Background to OFF;
    set Parental Lock to OFF;
    set TV Rating to NR (not rated).

the back of the vcr/dvd player will have some rca plugs that are red,yellow,white,they will be labeled out putthe yellow is video,the red and white are left and right audio,the back of your tv should have the same thing,it should say input,get a rca cable with plugs on both ends and match the plugs to the colors,if you tv or dvd player,doesnt have these,then you will need to plug your cable box into the dvd player and run a coaxial from the dvd player and tv,use channel 3 or 4 on the dvd player and 3 or 4 on the tv

Black box in middle of screen/picture

Closed Caption function to that channel you select is ON. Make it OFF, when you are in that channel which displays this black box. It will be best to reset the TV to its factory settings first, and then re-tune it. for more details, refer its user manual.

Hitachi DV-PF 2U dvd player works fine when hooked directy to TV (channel 3) but won't work when connected through the new COX digital cable box. TV is set to channel 4, dvd player turned on, disc...

If the cable box needs to be set to 4, the TV will need to be set to 4 as well as the dvd player. The hookup should be cable box to dvd player to the TV for your system to work. Let me know if you have any other questions. Thanks.

What channel do you watch a vcr/dvd on.

It depends on the way you have the combo set up, your instruction manual shows you different ways of doing this, but to answer the question it would be channel 3 or 4 if you are using the RF out ot OUT to TV connector in the back of your combo. You can also view tape and disc playback if you set the TV for VID1 or VID2 if you are using the rca dubbing cables(yellow-red-white).I hope this helps!

Phillips dvdplayervideorecorder connect w/zinwell converter box

First off get the TV on the right channel. It will either be ch3 or ch4. If you are using a cable box the dvd/vcr combo will have to be on ch3 or ch4 as well. OK, Make sure the input connector on the combo is hooked to the output connector of the cable box and the output connector of the combo is hooked to the input connector of the tv. Deal with one part at a time. First hook the combo to the tv and get the tv on the right channel (ch3 or ch4) so that you can see a pre-recorded dvd or video play. Then you will know what channel the tv is supposed to be on. When you find it don't bother the tv channel any more. Stop the dvd or video and hook up the cable box and turn on the cable box and set the box to a known good channel. Now put the combo on ch3 or ch4 with the combo's channel selector buttons until you see the cable box playing on the tv (remember you already set up the tv channel). Change channels on the box but don't bother the channels on the tv or combo anymore. You can put the box on whatever channel you want. The box will be your channel selector. I certainly hope that this helps. I know it can be confusing but don't give up. Just remember that the tv and combo have to always be on ch3 or ch4 (which ever one you found before). Good luck and thanks.

Magnavox DV220mw9 won't record from Tv, hard to connect

check out this diagram, paying close attention to the audio video cable hookups.

assume the cable tv box represents the converter box

you are going to come out of the converter box audio and video outputs into the new magnavox dvd/vcr combo audio and video inputs.

Then out of the new magnavox dvd/vcr combo outputs to the inputs on the tv if it has such inputs. The TV will have to operate on the video input 1 or 2 if the tv has such a thing, use the remote for the tv to adjust the input signal to line in 1 or 2 depending on what it has.

If the tv has no coaxial input or audio video inputs then you might have to use an adapter, you can get these from radio shack.

You say it will not record from the tv, but in all actuality the dvd vcr combo is getting the signal from the converter box not the tv, do you understand what I mean here?

So the dvd vcr combo gets input from the converter box so you will have to set it to view signal from the line input you have plugged in from the converter box. line 1 or 2 or whatever the input is.

the tv will have to be set on the line input to view the signal from the dvd vcr combo.

That is as easy as I can put it. Study the diagram closely. You will see what I mean.

You have to choose the right INPUT on your TV where your DVD player was connected. If your using the Yellow/Red/White cable from your DVD player you need to choose on your TV the input Example Video1 Video2, etc... If your using the COAX,(like cable wire) Put your TV on Channel 3 or 4. Hope this may help you. Please post the outcome, if you need further help. Is this TV is a COMBO?
