Re: Helping out my brother...
With the No Data showing up, most likely the dvd laser is burnt out. You can try cleaning the lens of the laser with a soft cloth but sony had this problem with the earlier models. If it is still under warranty, then get them to fix it otherwise I am assuming the warranty is expired, you should then sony and they will most likely say the same problem and can help you figure out what to do next, you may end up sending it in for repairs. good luck and I hope this helps, please feel free to post further questions. thank you

I've had many ps2 slims with this problem. More often than not its the dead beef syndrome, which was caused by irregular power flow and it frys the lazer. Its might not be this but it is likely. There is a possible fix here it requires good solder knowledge
Christmas tree syndrome (flashing lights and all) is usually the result of a bad earth.
Start at the battery check all earth connections, especially at the motor and froame.
I am sure you will find some corrosion.
I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM OUT OF MY PS2 AND MY SON PS2. I FOUND THIS NEW SITE THAT TOLD ME WHAT WAS WRONG FOR FREE AND FIXED IT WITHIN A FEW DAYS.
http://PS2EARTH.synthasite.com I LOVE FIXYA BUT THIS SITE IS BETTER FOR GAMERS. THEY CARE.
have you tried taking the ps2 apart and fixing the disc read error? its common in the ps2 its simple. buy a can of air and take the ps2 apart and spray around lens not directly on it...i can send a link if you wish.
To all you guys having this problem with PS2 - I bought World Tour for my brother and put it in this morning. It worked the 1st time we put it on, but we restarted the game because both guitars weren't connected, and it would NOT work after that (we have an old fat PS2 by the way). After reading online, I found out this disc is a Dual Layered DVD, and can cause problems reading it
Here's what I did to fix it - I took out all 8 screws on the bottom of the PS2, popped the case off, and then took out the 2 tiny screws for the DVD drive. After taking that case off, you can see the laser lens. All I did was clean it with an alcohol-soaked Q-tip, then buffed it clean, and after turning the game back on - it works fine! We're so pumped over here, and to anyone else having the problem, I bet this will fix it! Good luck!
This problem usually occurs when your lens has a problem, try cleaning your lens (Excluding for PS2 Slim), if the problem still occurs try checking your lens, if its broken all your need to do is to replace it.
have you tried holding down the reset button to turn off your console. Months before I bought my Ps2 I noticed my friends turning off their PS2's using the switch on the back. When i bought mine , months later i was invited to a friends house and noticed when he turned off his ps2 by holding the reset button down for a few seconds. After playing on their trampoline i went home and tried this reset button thing and it worked. Although i had the fat bulky ps2 this trick also works on slimline models too. This should solve your problem. The switch on the back i later found out was for when you wanted to turn off your ps2 during a thunderstorm.
