when you open the front cover, there is a waste toner tank on the bottom right side of the printer.
Remove the tank and chuck out the waste toner, wipe the tank clean with a cloth and slide tank back in position and close the cover.
this wil resolve the message on the screen

try making a copy off of glass. if black mark is gone, then you have to clean the narrow strip of glass to the left of big glass.

SOURCE: Hi. My MFC 9420CN has
This happens when the processor of printer no longer recognizes the cartridges. This happens because either the cartridges are not the right ones for this printer (or fakes) or there is a hardware defect in the data path between the cartridge and the mainboard (or something went wrong with the processor itself).
To find out if it's a cartridge problem just insert the old ones and see if they get recognized. If they do then the toner cartridges you just bought are bad - either they are refilled ones and the chip on the cartridge hasn't been reseted or they are fakes. In that case you must obtain genuine cartridges either directly from a dealer or online from a good site.
If even the old cartridges aren't recognized then something went wrong inside the printer - probably a static discharge has damaged the mainboard and you will need to perform a full diagnose on it to certify that (the printer will be connected to a pc thru the USB and a special program used - a job for a certified repairman). Most likely the mainboard will have to be replaced - an extremely expensive repair - ask a quote before accepting it.
