  1. Is the daisy wheel locked in the forward position?
    1. Pull the black lever back, away from the platen.
    2. Lift out the daisy wheel and inspect it for damage; replace the daisy wheel if it is damaged.
    3. Re-insert the daisy wheel and push the black lever towards the platen until it locks in place.
  2. Is the ribbon moving?
    1. Lift the ribbon cartridge out of the typewriter
    2. Inspect the ribbon for damage
    3. If the ribbon is silver, it is exhausted and must be replaced
    4. If the hammer has been striking in one place, there will be a clear area near the center of the ribbon.
    5. Turn the colored knob on the left side of the ribbon cartridge counter-clockwise to advance the ribbon a small amount. Replace the ribbon if it will not advance.
    6. Re-insert the ribbon
  3. Turn on the typewriter, insert a piece of paper into the typewriter and type a few letters
    1. Did the hammer move forward?
    2. If the hammer moved, did the ribbon advance with each keystroke?
If the hammer did not move or the ribbon did not advance, the typewriter will require service. If the typewriter still does not make an impression on the paper, your typewriter will require service.

Replaced ribbon but now the ribbon doesn't advance. Could it be ribbon itself is defective or could I have replaced it wrong? Ribbon is wrong replacement?

Try removing the ribbon, advancing it a foot or so by hand. Install it, mark the feed wheel type and see if it is turning.

I have a IBM Model 5651 Memory Typewriter (Selectric II carriage), and I cannot make the ribbon advance while typing. If I turn the ribbon it will type until the ‘ink’ runs out. It’s just not advancing. ...

If this takes a selectric II ribbon the Spiked driver may be gummed up. Remove the ribbon,
find the latch that holds the ribbon mech. open, release it the ribbon drive should swing freely to the right, if not spray some WD40 on the pivot point, above and below the arm then work it back and forth it should free up.

Its not printing

Make sure that you have a good ribbon installed and that the ribbon is advancing as the carriage moves. If the ribbon is not advancing it will only print until the ink has been used up on the section of ribbon stuck in front of the print head. It will also need a new carriage if the ribbon is not advancing.

IBM Selectric II Ribbon Not Advancing

First check to be sure that the ribbon is on the left of the shock wire where it comes out of the cassette, if that is OK then check the ribbon driver it should move freely and swing to the ribbon take up spool. Some WD40 will free it up. Also be sire the ribbon is winding in the direction of the arrows.

The ribbon doesn't advance at all? Try turning the ribbon by hand. If it is really hard to turn, or doesn't advance when you turn the knob (make sure you turn it in the direction of the arrow), then the ribbon is defective and you just need to get a good one.
If the ribbon turns easily, the leave the ribbon off, type and watch to see if the black knob on the left of the ribbon plate (the place where you put the ribbon), that turns the ribbon, is moving.
Also I have found that some brands of ribbons simply do not work on this machine. If the ribbon and the ribbon drive is working, try a different brand of ribbon.
