If its a Murray lawn mower like mine, it may be using a Briggs and Stratton engine. it sounds like the spring is broken or out of its track You can find the right part which is called a "pulley/spring assembly" by locating the model number of the engine. There are instructions on how to find this at: http://www.briggsandstratton.com/maint_repair/repair_parts/

Pull rope will not pull

Remove recoil rope assembly. Ensure rope is properly wrapped around. While recoil assembly is removed use ratchet and socket to rotate fly wheel, remove spark plug first, observe compression and exhaust at spark plug whole during rotation of fly wheel. Clean or replace spark plug. Ensure oil is full. 30w. Set spark plug gap. Always use Stabile in gas. Replace coil rope is required. Purchased by the foot at any mower repair store.

I have a Yard Machine Lawn mower by MTD it has a briggs and stratton engine. The pull cord pulls, to easily I might add, but will not start the lawn mower. It doesn't seem to engage the motor. What might...

If you think the rope pulls too easily the engine may not have enough compression. Consider doing a compression test or a leak-down test on the cylinder.

Can't pull my starter rope on my Lawn Mower-seems locked up---

It sounds as if the plastic / teflon pieces have fallen off of the tabs bent 90 deg under the rewind spool assy. That would cause the spool to teeter and then bite into the metal tab.

However there are other types out there that have a friction type activation via a philipps head screw and washer. These sometimes get dirty and can be freed up with a couple of drops of oil on both the actuating tounge / dog / catch and the pivot areas along with lubrication inside the cap area from the sides to reduce friction. Don't over do it with the oil..just make sure there is enough to do the necessary lubrication. The inside of the cap can be rusted also and the oil will loosen up the spools' ability to rotate.

When you do put the recoil / engine cover back on start the 3 mounting bolts but hold the top of the recoil up off of the engine so that when you tighten the mounting bolts the bottom of the holes are right against the bottom side of the mounting bolts.

Thanks for using FixYa.

The rope broke on my lawn mower and I am trying to rewind the spring, but was advised to buy a complete starter assembly, I need to know how much one is and where can I get one. I bought my lawn mower from...

If your rope broke, there was no reason to take the spring out. The rope can be replaced just by taking the rewind housing off, turning pulley to get rest of old rope out, wind the pulley (and spring) the direction the rope would be pull it when starting. Then , when it's wound tight, back off to align the holes in pulley and cover. Hold it there, stick about an 8' piece of rope from the outside through the pulley and tie a knot. Hold the rope and let the spring pull the rope back into the starter. an tie handle back. Take your housing, and spring to a shop. They can re-install the spring and put on a rope a heck of a lot cheaper that buying that whole assembly.

Pull rope seems to be locked up...won't pull

make sure you can turn the blade by hand, make sure grass isn't stopping the blade after that make sure the break cable isn't bad, sometime's the cable don't disengage the break from the flywheel. Hope this works.
