I keep getting the error message that the installer can't find an appropriate file when I try to connect.

boot from the CD copy of your windows XP. enter in console session and manually replace the file. if the file is corrupted this should fix it

Check the file extension.
This occurs when you don't have a program which can support the type of file trying to open.
Try opening with some program or chage the extension of file if it is not proper or install appropriate software supporting the filetype.

The error message you are getting is a result of a trojan virus that embedds itself in WININET.DLL.

Two simplest solutions:

1. If there is nothing important on the laptop that isn't already backed up, use your Dell install disks to re-install the computer.

2. If you have important files on the drive which are NOT backed up. Take it to a pro, or buy a 2.5" Hard drive enclosure, put your drive in the caddy and connect it to another computer that has an up to date virus scanner. Scan the drive for viruses and allow the virus scanner to clean all virus' it finds.

When that's done copy the files you need to the other computer and then Restore the laptop as per step 1. When it's up and running again, install a good virus scanner, then copy the files back to it from the other PC.

that's a problem with software...

try downloading google talk again and install it... even then if you are getting the same problem... its a problem in the Operating system... some file must have corrupted... so re-install OS and install gtalk...

or simple way.. juz login to your gmail id... u have an internal gtalk available... in inbox itself.. hahaha..

Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services and make sure that Windows Installer service is set to manual or auto and click Start to start the service.

your DLL - direct library link file seem to be corrupt....you may need to install over the pervious version.

what is the exact error message and extension error?
