What OS is your computer? If it's an older version of windows you may have to manually install drivers for the hd.

My external MAXTOR BASICS PORTABLE 160GB is giving me a malfunction message when i plug it in to my computer all of a sudden. I have 5 years of memory on there. Is my information retrievable? Why did this...

Yes your information is retrievable.First of all change the USB cable and see if it still gives you the malfunction error. If it does then you harddisk is on the verge of crashing thats why this is happening. And you can take the external to tech department for them to retrieve your information for.
I hope this solution has been helpful.

My 160GB Crossfire is not recognised when connected to any of the USB ports. It used to be, but then I've had some other PC issues recently that meant a forced closure of the PC and I'm concerned that...

When starting the external drive there is not much more than just plugging it in to a USB port and turning it on. The computer should recognize it ( showing something like the window shown here http://attachments.techguy.org/attachments/66120d1129787805/new-device-found2.jpg ) and it will show up in the My Computer area and a green arrow looking icon ( http://home.krb.nsw.edu.au/start/images/USB2.jpg ) When disconnecting an external drive the correct procedure is to left click the arrow in the system tray and select Safely Remove Mass Storage Device (X:) (whatever letter you device shows here)
You may want to test if another computer recognizes the device being plugged in to see if it is still functioning. You may want to also try plugging the device into a different USB port on your computer.

I just bought an iOmega eGo 160GB external hard drive and have no idea how to use it once I've installed the program. Help!!

From what I'm finding; this drive is a USB 2.0 drive. First, you'll need to plug the drive into the computer via the supplied USB cable (if it came with one) and any AC power for the drive if it requires it.

Then, your PC should detect it and you then need to run the software for it to be configured properly.

To use the drive, simply (if in windows) double click my computer and the drive will probably come up with a name such as eGo or iOmega Hard Disk or possibly even External Hard Disk. From there, double click that drive and start copy files! :)

My external hard drive don't work propertly it's a simple tech FV-U35/500 it was working good but now the computer can't detect it

try connecting it with another computer to make sure the drive is fine.
if its not i need to know are you using a USB HDD
if yes
try deleting USB ROOT HUB from device manager
press and hold the windows key (its between ctrl and alt on your keyboard)
while holding the windows key press pause/break key you will get system properties screen
if its XP you have to click on hardware tab and then choose devicemanager
the last option will be for USB in this list
right ckick USB ROOT HUB and click on uninstall or delete
restart your system.
then chek if its getting detected or not

Freecom external 160gb back up - laptop not recognising back-up drive. Light is on on the drive, but that's all. Help please.

All things considered, I would use a different usb cable to attach the device to your laptop and try updating chip set drivers. The north bridge controls usb hub as well as video.

EverestHome is a software I use to ID the north and south bridge chip sets, the cpu, board, bios etc.

If the external is not detected on other machines then it could be a problem with the external drive chips or connectors.

I purchase a FreeAgent Go 160gb,getting started it does not do anything. the diolog window does not come up,unit just beeps...

Hi,
If this is an External USB Hard-Drive, your problem is insufficient power provided by the USB Port.
1:- Try Another USB Port If You Have One.
2:- If you have a 2 into 1 USB Cable, connect 2 into 2 individual USB Ports ( On Computer ) And 1 into Hard-drive Unit.
If none of this works, your drive is faulty.
