My kayak was nearly 30 years old & exposed to the elements all the time. To clean it up, I washed it down with the Amway Car Wash & polished with the Amway Silcon Glaze car polish.

The kayak came up beautifully & I'm still using it today

SOURCE: What is the best way to remove oxidation from a fiberglass kayak

There is really no easy way short of sanding lightly and repainting. (I am told that "tremclad" paint intended for exterior use on metal in tough situations is good for this kind of thing.)

Wax (car wax or wax for fibreglass boats--which is often available in colour) will work for the short term.

Can you refinish a plastic kayak

No poly-plastics of the type used in manufacturing can only be armor-all surface cleansed but makes the craft very slippery to lift and use. Color is restored though. Make sure there are no brittle areas that have been 'cooked' by the sun while stored in a yard. IMPORTANT!

I am getting lots of water in my tandom outfitter kayak . one hour trip produced about 3 gallons of water. how can we fix this problem leak?

Probably a crack in a seam rather than an obvious hole in the bottom. Empty the contents and submerge in water. Or conversely, fill up the kayak with water and make note of the leaks. Food coloring in the water may help to identify the area.

Fiberglass repair kits are available at the hardware store for minimal cost.

Need to repair the bottom of my ocean kayak

Local hardware stores have fiberglass repair kits. Depending on how big the hole is (larger than a quarter), you might want to overlay it prior to patching. The hardware store should have a strong enough and thin enough material depending on the size.

The kits work well, just remember to let it cure for longer than required for a secure bond. My father snapped his entire canoe in half and was able to repair it and resume his trip out of the wilderness.

Is the yakima big stack safe for fiberglass kayaks

I used the big stack for my river kayaks and it did fine. But my fiberglass sea kayaks are so much heavier that I did not take the chance. For 1 of my kayaks I spent a lot of money to get the special sea kayak rack and it worked great. For my wife's kayak I saved some money and bought some simple v-shaped foam rubber rack attachments for $20. The foam attachments are so much easier, I don't even use the Yakima attachemnts any more. My suggestion - save your money and go with the cheap foam attachments.

Can you fix a hole in the bottom of a kayak?

Try using a product called Marine-tex it can be purchased @ most outdoor goods stores. It is not that expensive and is a 2 part compound that is very easy to use and does not dry so fast you can't work with it. I have used it to patch aluminum boat hulls and fiberglass PWC's. Give it a try..

Which kayak to buy

Plastic and fiberglass are the two materials the majority of kayak manufacturers are using today. Plastic kayaks are lower priced, have the largest selection of models and are known for being tough. The down side of a plastic hull is that it doesn't hold an exact shape, it's softer (therefore slower). It's close to weighing the same as fiberglass but you can't perform field repairs on it. Fiberglass is approximately $1000 dollars more for the equivalent-length plastic boat, but the hull is much stiffer, faster through the water and you can repair it. The down side to fiberglass is that it's more expensive, and if you drop it off the top of your car, you can crack it
