Question about Nikon 847 Tripod

1 Answer

Wobbly cameras on quality tripods -- stripped screw mountings?

I have four sturdy tripods for lightweight video cameras -- two are manfrottos with quick release plate. Other two have screw mounting. Been using them for a while and at least two of them have very wobbly connections now. Is it possible to strip the screw mount on the camera? Or is the problem with the quick release plates -- screw mounts. Doesn't matter which camera i put on -- even the lesser used ones -- they are all wobbly. The connection to the tripod itself is solid -- no problem with the camera disengaging even when upside down -- but the actual camera itself wiggles around on connection. Not good for weddings.

Just for clarification, when you put any of the cameras on any of the tripods, the cameras attach firmly to the tripod, but move when you pan or tilt the camera?

Could you please tell me what cameras you are using? Is the camera body plastic or metal?

Thank you for clarifying your problem for me.

Sounds as if the tripod socket in the base of the camera is too shallow for the thread on the QR plate. You can undo the split ring that holds the screw in the plate, and fit a washer beneath it to shorten the protruding screw. What I do is keep a plate permanently attached to each of my cameras and camcorders, so that I do not have to continually remove it to put another camera on.

IT SOME TIMES TAKES A LOT OF EFFORT TO SEPARTE THE HEAD FROM THE TRIPOD. MAKE SURE YOU REMOVE THE 3 LITTLE SCREWS FROM BELOW THE HEAD, AND MAKE SURE THE TRIPOD AND HEAD ARE NOT COLD. IF THEYA RE WARM THEY WILL SEPARATE EASIER.

SOURCE: Removing Tripod head from center post on Manfrotto Modo 785B

I have the national geographic branded version. Here is how you remove the head.

(1) remove the center post from the tripod
(2) lock the ball head with the trigger lock
(3) grasp the body of the ball head with one hand and the center column with the other.
(4) turn counter clockwise.

If you're intending to replace the ballhead, be warned that the thread is non-standard. I have a new "plug" with a standard 1/4" thread made for free by the machinist at my job. I don't know how you would go about adapting it without such a capability.

SOURCE: Nikon 70-200mm Tripod Mounting Question

There should be a mount that attaches around the barrel of the lens with a flat part that would allow you to screw that to your quick release plate. The flat part usually have several screw holes so you can mount the quick release plate for or aft for better balance. These mounts are removable so it may have been taken off.

are you just mounting a camera to the tripod itself? - you need to purchase a head as well - the head screws onto the top of the tripod, and then the camera fixes to the head, usually with a qr plate.

Is there a Carbon fibre small compact with splitter

Carolyn
-If you are looking for a compact light weight (CF) tripod for video...., that is going to be...., stable & durable (for use with a smaller video camera or a DSLR) & with a mid-level spreader...., I have some bad news for you. They do not exist!!!!!
-You can get a number of tripods that meet some of these requirements..., but not all!!!
-No fear....., it is still possible to get a tripod that is small, light, repairable and with a higher weight capacity and better durability than either of the Manfrotto tripods you mentioned..., but they will not use a mid-level spreader!!!

-Questions for you...., the manfrotto #055CXB has a column that terminates with a flat plate & a 3/8-16" thread. The Manfrotto # MTV502AM tripod has a 75mm bowl mount. Do you use a video head with a flat base or with a 'bowl'?
-If your head has a flat base consider looking at CF tripods from brands such as Sirui (#N2204 or #N3204)..., great value tripod from China..., or products from Gitzo or Really Right Stuff...., (superior products...., and your grandkids will be using them..., but pricey)!!!!
-If your head uses a 75mm bowl mount get the Miller #1501 tripod...., stupidly strong and well supported.

-Bottom line..., with light to mid weight cameras, if you go with a good quality spreaderless tripod that uses 'rotary locks' vs 'quick release' locks...., the leg mechanisms are so superior that you will find that you will get less flex than most tripods with spreaders. They will also be smaller, lighter and allow you to shoot far closer to the ground!!!

Go t a shop that has a good selection of quality tripods and test for leg twist..., you will be converted!!! (note: to test this leg flex..., extend the legs & grab hold of (2) of the tubes near the top 'crown' and then try to move the legs to the left then right...., many will exibit significant flex at the joints!!!!

Sorry your question doesn't make scents the Canon EW-78E is a lens hood and the Manfrotto 525 MVB is a Pro lightweight video tripod there is no way to mount then together.

I'm trying to attach a Canon EOS Rebel XS to a Manfrotto 190XPROB tripod, but the tripod socket on the camera is too small. How do I attach them?

You need a head. The tripod has a standardized screw for accepting a tripod head, which is a larger screw than for the tripod mount on the camera. There are a variety of heads available, ball heads, three-axis heads, geared heads, pan-and-tilt heads, and more.

Here's a page showing Manfrotto heads:

Make sure you are loosening the 3 grub screws under the tripod head to release it from the tripod center column. there are the 3 slotted screw heads under the grey part of the tripod head. Make sure you back them all the way out before you start to loosen the head.

Attaching head to tripod

video cameras come with a 1/4-20 threaded socket in the.  Make sure the 3066 has this size screw projecting form the place where the camer is attached.  The two Manfrotto should be compatible
The only time fitting together becomes a problem is if you are into the heavy duty professional equipment.
We especially like the Manfrotto fluid heads and have several in our facility.

701RC2 going on 745B sticks

Hey SkipHall,
As in most Manfrotto tripods this tripod should have 3 set screws underneath the head mounting surface. Unscrew these set screws and you should be able to unscrew the current head off the tripod by holding the center column and turning the head counter clockwise. Installation of the new head should be the reverse. I hope this helps!

Sincerely,
Allan
