Problem for Initial DVD-2540

Code for Initial DVD Player

By Jimmy NY - usenet poster

" "
I have a cheaper DVD player I purchased at Circuit City in early 2003, an
Initial DVD-2540. It's a "no-name" brand apparently, but it's done well in
the 2 years we've owned it. Plays DVD+Rs and DVD+RWs just fine, JPEG discs
as well.

Problem is, I can't find that blessed remote anywhere. I've looked all over
the creation, I just can't find it.

Most universal remote controls don't seem to work this brand. Does anyone
know of any that do?

Google is your friend! Radio Shack "4 in 1 Family Favorites Remote"
lists two codes for Initial DVD players.

Like I said BEFORE, I'm well aware that (say) GE, JVC, Toshiba et al
will get more support than Initial, Symphonic et al.

Even so, I'm looking at my Radio Shack remote (5-1 cat#15-2115), and
I'm seeing, for instance, TV codes for brands like Admiral, AOC,
Brockwood, Celebrity. Under CD players, I'm seeing Soundesign (a cheap
brand from the 80's for crying out loud), Oritron, GPX (another cheap
80s brand), Tascam, Yorx (talk about a crappy brand). So is it such a
stretch to think that Initial might be in there?

To the other guy: thanks for the link for the OTHER Radio Shack product
which does handle Initial. I did try Google before, couldn't find
anything.

Most of these no-name brands are made by 2 or 3 Chinese manufacturers,
with different names slapped on for different retailers. They most
likely all respond to the same codes. Even many name-brand players are
now made by the same 3rd party manufacturers, with the same codes!!

Thanks for the link. I didn't see the catalog number in the owner's
manual (PDF file) to find out which one it was. Took some searching,
but apparently this remote is catalog #15-2142 (couldn't find such a
thing in the PDF file).

Here is the link to it:

Many RadioShack remotes are rebadged OneForAll remotes. You can get
all sorts of information and code lists here:
http://www.hifi-remote.com/ofa /

For the volume, you can first try setting Volume Lock (read the manual)
to the TV. If you don't have a DVD button, or the DVD is coded onto
another device key, then volume lock won't work for that device. You
then need to use the key remap option to map the TV volume keys onto the
DVD volume keys.

As a follow-up--since I already own a Radio Shack 5-1 which I bought
about 3 months ago (Catalog #15-2115), I figured maybe (since it was
the same brand, Radio Shack) it could use the Initial DVD codes from
the owner's manual of the one you referred me to.

Right on--it surely did.

Codes 0717, 1931 were listed; code 0717 worked perfectly. All essential
functions are there; the only button I miss is the TITLE menu button
and the REMAIN button for showing time-remaining on the current
title/chapter. But the essential functions--PLAY, FAST SEARCH (FF/REW),
PAUSE, STOP, Chapter Skip (Channel Buttons), VOLUME (and mute), menu
navigation, on-screen display navigation tool (mainly for skipping
titles and setting subtitles, audio mode, etc), POWER OFF/ON--all of
these worked fine.

The only thing I don't like about that particular remote I own is that
it doesn't have dummy-defaults for things like volume-control; e.g., if
you have it in VCR mode and press volume, it doesn't activate the TV
control for that minute; you have to switch to TV to change the volume
then back to VCR. (However, when in TV mode the FF/REW, PLAY etc
functions of the VCR are activated.)

Oh yeah, I've heard of that. Unacceptable. I want a universal that
specifically lists this brand outright. I do realize that not every
brand can be covered, and (say) Sony, JVC et al are more important than
Initial. But you'd still think SOMEONE has a remote that specifically
covers it. That's what I'm looking for.

Most universal remotes I've seen have a method to "search" for a code
that is not listed. You might try to find one with this method.
Basically it involves manually going through all the codes on the
remote until you find the one that works.
